I have a JD 60 I would like to put a wide front on,I have a JD 1064 running gear is it possible to fabricate this? anybody try something like this? will it work? thanks for any help.

I would suggest that you consider a steering axle from a combine with power steering- most of your work is already done. Easy to find in combine salvage yards. Cyl is already mounted to steer it, pivot attachment to frame is there.Your idea can work, but needs more work than this idea. If I ever reversed another loader tractor like the one 30+ years go, I"d use the whole hydrostatic setup from a combine. Hoses "bend" easier than shafts.

Read your post again- if you can use the existing steering system, you need to come up with a steering arm connecting the vertical pivoting shaft to the steering axle. That"s a matter of the correct geometry- certainly not insurmountable- might take a few tries to figure the length. Taking the weight off the front end would let you manually determine angles, etc.

Couldn"t resist this one- with a 1064 gear, start with the front end! Much easier making the turns...

Back in the 60's I made adjustable wide front axels for both a VAC Case and a Farmall H. 3 inch pipe is a good fit in 3 1/2 pipe and 3 1/2 pipe is a good fit in 4" pipe. These are schedule 40 (common) water pipe. Slot 5 or 6 inches on each end of the larger pipe and draw together to clamp the inner pipe. I used tie rod ends and adjustable tie rods from the salvage yard. Most from stock on hand from junking cars I had done.

It can be done. Like JMS/.MN said it's easyer using a combine steering axle.
Anyways thats what I used was a JD combine steering axle from the old series combines.
I had to shorten the axle 8" and tie rod. Robbed the steering motor and directional valve for it also. I used a small GM Power steering pump on mine there wasn't a whole lot of room under the hood for a big pump.
It sure helped my back out after doing this!!

Mike you know what...I was expecting to see an abortion but that looks DARN GREAT. I saw a M Farmall once on sleazebay with a WF fab'd from a combine steer axle that was a total joke. Yours looks Very Good, nice work. You should be prouder of it than if you'd used a factory wf.

Railhead,
Thanks for your comment. It took me a while to figure how I wanted to fabricate the pedistal part of it going to the axle. Didn't want it to fall off halfway down the field. My hardest part was making up a bracket for the power steering pump and alternator joined together as one bracket. So far so good it's been on there close to ten years now with no problems. Front end sets low now since I had new rear tires put on.

I've got a home-made (or aftermarket) wide front that was from a DEERE "G". Wouldn't cost you much. Would you like to see some photos?

Do you have the one piece or the two piece pedistal? Two piece would be a lot easier to convert.
