The Old Man

I was trying to get permission cross a persons property to access a field for a mowing job, again this year. I was trying to tell her who I was, and why I was calling. Then she said Oh, you're the old man on the tractor. I said that's me. I guess I am getting old' but no one ever told me. I didn't think 67 was old. Is it? My Dad was still doing tractor work into his 80's. Now I thought that was old. How young are some of you folks? Stan

I'm 54 and do not regard myself as "old". However, when my father (now 88) was 54, I was convinced to the bone that he was old. Go figure.

53 for me it's not the years it's the aches and pain. I don't know where the years went I guess I have been so busy working I didn't notice them passing.

I'm 52. I don't feel old, but in the back of my mind is the knowledge that both my dad and grandfather died in their early sixties.

My wife and I figured it out this way.

Anyone that is 10 years older then yourself is old, anyone that is 10 years younger then yourself is young.----See how it works.

Confidentially----Since I am 40 that makes you old. Of course you are over 65 and considered elderly.

65 and don't feel old. Decided awhile back that you start feeling "old" when you have something to measure yourself by. For example, when you look at your kids a realize they are making the mistakes you made "uhh HOW many years ago" or they get married and provide grandkids suddenly you think "I'm OLD!".
It hit me one day when a young man who worked for me called me Mr. Smith. I looked at him and thought "I'm old enough to be your father, I can't be OLD".

If you can still get out of bed by yourself, you're still young. I'm 76 and the better half is 78, Soon be married 56 years. Hal

54, I want to be old enough to retire ,but not need to , my dad died at 97 , my mother is 92 now and she take less med than I do ,,But she didnt do some the stupid thing I did ,her and my dad would take a nip ,, but they never smoked, I on the other hand tried to drink the world dry/ smke like a diesel for years before my brain started work and got me to understand it wasnt good,,been quit 25 yrs, remarried to a lady I knew when we were kids , Now I have a life to enjoy, hope all my pass hasnt shorten it to much!!!

James and I both are in our late 50's. Don't feel "old" (most of the time), but guess the youngsters see us as old since they now offer us the discount for Seniors.

I often wonder how many of these "youngsters" could do the same day's work out on the farm that we do.

I think the secret to never getting "old" is never thinking that you are old. My 97 yr old father thinks he is still young yet. last year at Rolag, he was racing the campground shuttle bus to the admissions gate with his electric scooter( he won)

66 this summer. Few aches and some arthritis, take meds for blood pressure. No time to decide if I'm old or young, too busy.
A few months ago I babysat my 6 month old grandson, along with his other grandfather. Rest of the family was gone, so we did the only prudent thing. We took him to the bar with us. Some older ladies were making over the baby, and one said "How old?". I said "66", she said "Not you, D*** A**, the baby". Guess maybe I am getting older.

The term "Old Man" is a relative one. Around here I am called, "The Old Man" at the ripe age of 43. I joined the service later than most of those I went to boot camp with, and at age 24, I was even then considered the "Old Man". Remember that getting old may not be the best, until we remember the other alternative.

When I was 34 I was working in an office with some young (20/21 year old) female soldiers. Caught a couple talking about me one day and one said "but he's so old"........ Started developing arthritus from that day on...

There is an upside. Many things that would get younger persons in trouble for their behaviour are not mentioned when it's me doing it. No one ever addresses me for scratching whatever I want to scratch.

74, and to busy the give it much thought.

I haven't even admitted to "middle age" yet.

Jeez, when I fired up the computer this morning, thought I smelled something wierd. It took until I checked in here to realize it was dinosaur poo eminating from this post :)

Seriously, I think age is kind of a state of mind. I"m 34, I have friends younger than me that whine and stay home from work every time they have a sniffle, and most of the older guys a hang around with, have the get up and get to it attitude.

One of my best friends is an 84 yr old guy I worked for when I was in school. With only minimal help, he runs a bigger cattle and crop operation than most around here.

Well I just hit eighty my mind does not know it but the old body sure lets me know every day. I need some new ball joins, a starter, some new plumbing and boy I like that electric wheel chair. I can go out in the hay field an do not have worry about being asked to drive the tractor.

59. But I don't think of myself as old.

Went to a doctor I've only seen a few times since my old one passed away last year. He was looking at my records and said "you've got a few problems". noting medication I've been on for years. I said "c'mon Doc, I want to live another 40 years". He chuckled and said "I doubt you'll live another 40 years". I said "what?". He said "how old are you?" I said 59. He said "Oh, I SERIOUSLY doubt you'll live another 40 years". Then he checked my blood pressure and said it was a little high. I told him it was fine when I walked and before he gave me his assessment on my lifespan.

Actually, I agree with the others. You're only as old as you feel and think. I know people in their 40's who look and act like their 60s. I also know people in their 70's who stay active, skiing, riding horses, etc. and look like 50. Key is moderation, plenty of sleep, exercise, diet and the most important thing: GENETICS.

Plus, we have to thank the pharmaceutical companies and modern medicine for many of us living past what we normally would without their intervention. So, while others may scream about the high cost of health care, I think it's a bargain. I would gladly forego a $600 monthly car payment and put the money toward my health.

51. Sometimes I feel a lot older than that, and sometimes a lot younger. Got my health anyway. The full time job is what's killing me, sitting on my behind in front of a computer. Much rather be sitting on a tractor anyday.

I worked for a small town with lots of RR guys. The ones that retired & stayed busy kept on going & going. One had 44 years on a track crew, retired, bought a TE 20 Feruson & mowed for hire for 15+ more years. Another guy was on a signal crew, retired, didn't seem to take to anything, died 3 years later. Stay busy, keep your mind focused, DON'T look back in case you're afraid of heights!!!

At 77 I am not old. I can do more work in a day than any of my kids. I do have some aches and pains some days after a hard days work. At age 21 a fortune teller told me I would live to be 99 and get shot by a jealous husband.

Congratulations El Toro,,, NOT Many folks can say what you say,,, married for 56 years to the same women, Good for you,,,,

It will be 50 years for us in a short while, and we are as happy as when we First Met..
being married to another after divorce is Adultery and damnation from God.

Blessing to you and Yours....

67, that is my age. 1942 was a great year.
I love being retired and do what I want when I want to. I am going to move some gravel this morning with my little Fergy tractor and then start getting things ready for our annual Ferguson Tractor EXPO which will be held in Le Sueur, MN at the end of the month.

MMJ you can't tell me you remember what some fortune teller told you 56 years ago. I know better than that. I can't even remember what my wife told me to do 5 minutes ago.

I know what you mean.. I'm 61, and a few years ago I said something to a young girl I worked with and I said something that might have been miscontrued (sp?).
I said I'm sorry, I hope I didn't insult you."
She said "Oh, no problem, when you say things like that, I think, isn't that cute."
Boy, I felt old that day!

77 in a few days. Feel tired but my body has been worn out by work and debauchery. 4 metal joints, cancer survivor, debilitating 3 month bout with the shingles last year etc. When I was 55 I still kept ahead of the youngsters but now they are eager to help me . I thank the Good Lord for my extra days most of the time but every once in a while I feel like quitting. I still try to help everyone I can which makes life worthwhile. Henry

I'm 54
Remember when in your 20's anyone over 50 seemed old?! Now that I'm past that point, I see more younger people (45 and younger)look and act older than I am!!

Age is simply a question of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter!

1942 was a good year. I retired about three years ago, but still do my tractor work. Now it is my schedule, not a time clock. stan

Guess I'm one of the younger ones (to reply, anyway) at 36. My wife (33 in Nov.) keeps telling me how 'old' I am. I am getting grey hair... I tell her it's because of her.

Well, I'm only 58, but the other day I had a 67 year-old guy tell me he thought I was the same age as him. (sigh) Jim

72 next month.Retired in 1999 from the Carpenters Union after 28 years. Farmed and milked cows all my life til 1971. In "05 got tired of trying to keep busy so got involved with a portable rest room buisness, kinda slow right now with the stoppage of construction but signs show a movement to get going again. We have 3 Trucks, buisness property and routes to maintain plus all the PR we are spreading around so I keep busy . Nice thing is the extra income and the chance ,if we want to get away for a week or so now and then it is posssible with good employees and a buisness that sort of runs itself. I have 4 Grand Daughters and it is a job in itself trying to react with them some times.I have some Health issues and medicate them which allows me to awake and look forward to a new day every day now so life is good.

I'll be 61 this Sunday, the 16th. The "rockers" among us will recall that the Woodstock rock festival was 40 years ago, Aug. 15 and 16, 1969. I celebrated my 21st birthday in my 6th week of Army basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington. Spent the day driving the bus taking the troops over to the Visitor's Center, got a sub to take a couple of my trips so I could have a little birthday party with my folks and sister. Sisters weren't allowed, so sis turned over her class ring and posed as my wife. The XO later congratulated me on my restraint- "Most of the couples are trying to consume each other's tonsils, but you just hugged." Also, he commented on the phenomenon of how married couples started looking like each other.

Am 63, will advance one the 1st of Nov. I've got asthma and have some trouble breathing at times but still young at heart. Remember you don't quit playing because you get old, you get old because you quit playing.

Soon to be 58 but I sure don't feel it. They call me the old-timer at work, but not much longer as I plan to SIM-I retire and enjoy playing farmer. My favorite tractor was made the same year as I was born. 1951 and it still runs good too!!

Ripe age 0f 29 still green on alot of things but with the knowledge and wisdom of the great people on this site will get better with age
Chris

I will be 70 in couple of weeks. I raced on the racetrack every weekend until 4 years ago. I didn't start racing until I was 60. I raced in the class from 18 years old up. Won the champonship my first year. Sold my J3 cub, but
still fly some. Earned my purple belt in karate 2
years ago. Just because us old farmers get long
in the tooth doesn't mean we can't still have fun.

77--married 56. Still do a little hobby farming but heart surgery slowed me down quite a bit. But at least I am looking at the grass from the top side.

67 isn't old, not nowadays.

I think the gal that said that to you wasn't too aware of common courtesy and manners, nor does she have much perspective on what passes for old. Too many people today don't think before they speak, and too many are just plain dingbats.

My Granddad also tractored into his late 80's, and I didn't even think he was all that old. He was still unbelievably strong. Just a few years ago, he must've been 84 or 85, there was a base for a big saw that ran off a belt in the way in the Machine Shed. I had no idea how much it weighed, but he just got on one side, me on the other and said "Let's move it!". After testing it a little I gave him a look like it might not be the best idea for him to be doing it. He gave me a mild expletive and chuckled. That unit must've weighed well over 300lbs., probably closer to 400. All I know is it was all I wanted and I was 40 and in pretty good shape. He was right there with me. And I could tell it made him a little bit proud to have impressed me so, which he had, and still does, even though he moved on last spring.

So don't let that ding-dong get you down, she sounds prety clueless to me.

I'm 23, but I have been known for years as 'Old Man' to a fellow who helps us with things sometimes. My family all say that I am crotchety enough now and they will be interested to see what I'm like as time goes by. Also I feel old a lot of the time and don't think much of the habits of the younger generation I'm part of.
Zach

46, but have the genes for a long life, My grandad was 85 when he re-roofed the chicken pen himself, cut a load of firewood at 87. Grandma finally gave up gardening at 98. They went to be with the Lord at age 104 and 101 respectively.

61 & feel like 80...work two jobs, no retirement ,heart trouble & married to a disabled ball&chain for 40yrs.

I'm turning 50 this 5 sept. Wow what a ride it has been so far. No complaints. Better half will be 49 in Dec. Been together since we was kids.

Can't wait for the next 50.

Farmer

What a ding bat. For all you guys that have good wives, count yourself luck that you are not married to a stupid woman like that. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I would hate to be her husband.

65-The year I was born they made a special penny. Steel like me, getting rusty. Still kicking but not too high. Still ride motorcycle but kinda slow. Cancer survivor, so far since 1988. Trusting the LORD for everything. Day at a time. Sometimes a second at a time. God Bless you farmers and tractor and motorheads. Me too. Dave

ill be 17 at the end of the month. Thank you to all the older more experienced ppl on this cite that help all us young guys out with our farming problems.
