Well I'm not really sure but the Massey has a perkins in it an the have pretty good lugging power I'm not sure what the Oliver has in it But I would sure like to see them hook up

Well if lbs for lbs they are the same the OLIVER will out pull the MF but since the MF has weights on it I would say it is not a fair deal

With equal operators, the massey... but not by much. It appears to have a bunch more cast which is what those duels are all about. It's not about power.

I do have to say this. When our 1600 was too tired to run the blower anymore, we'de run it with our 285. Now that the 1600 is rebuilt, it's back on the blower and it does a far better job running the blower than the 285 ever had.

Given the the 285 and 1080 have the same engine, and our 1600 has an overbore kit to bring it up to the same size engine as the 1650-55, it'd be a close race. If it's stationary PTO work, the Oliver hands down. Haven't had the 285 on a plow since we got the 1755 and then the 1855 and put them on the plow instead. The 1600 does pull the plow pretty well though, even without fluid or cast on the wheels.

Got a feeling it'd be a little closer than some think...

wow so the 1080, 1085, and the 285 have the same perkins 4 cylinder engine. 4.5x5 with 318 ci. rated at 2000 RPM's. It must be a pretty good engine then. The 285 has always looked to me like it needs more weight up front or maybe even everywhere. The 1085 weighs over 10000 pounds and i think our 1080 is over 8500.

The oliver will get on the disc in a couple weeks. I can't wait to try it out.

When Dad pulled the plow with the 285 (Oliver 565 w/3-16 bottoms) he had 4 suitcase weights on it, plus a large peice of concrete he found with a pipe through the middle that he hung betwen the other weights. Still would get light in the front. The 1600 has the base weight and 1 stack and it's more than enough to keep the front down on the same plow.

The 285 is the utility version of the 1085, so it's pretty close in weight. Not sure exactly, but our 285 tips the scales somewhere around 10,000. The 1600 is just over 7,000. Maybe 7300 or so. The 285 is a pretty stout tractor, and fairly nimble as well. I do like using the 285 for cutting & baling hay. I prefer raking with either the 1600 or the 1855 when it's hot out because it has a canopy to keep the sun off my head. That one pushes 14,000 the way we have it suited up so if the feilds are wet, I try to stay out of them with it.

all 3 of those are good tractors. I drive an 1855 at work and it sure has some power. The 285 should weigh 7600-11760 pounds according to tractordata. I agree with raking. Its soo much nicer when your on a row crop tractor especially with a canopy.

Our 1855 needs to go to the shop and have the engine looked at- It's starting to make some noise and we don't wanna be down in another month or so when we're gonna be looking at chopping corn.

Our 285 has loaded 18.4x34's. We have an old weight slip somewhere for the 285 and I know it was over 10,000 lbs. Would be nice to put new rubber on it but we've got way too many bills and not enough income on the farm right now.

Used to like raking hay with our 165, but now it's got a loader on it again so it doesn't get out to the feild all to often.

my dad grew up on a MF 165. He loved it and that was why he liked the 1080 we bought 2 years ago. I sure hope your 1855 doesnt have too big of a problem. Ive been told to watch running the waukeshua engines too hard. Do you think they are a good engine? my 1655 has 5000 hours on it. Should i be worried? it sounds real good. and man does it sound good. I love the sound of the waukeshua. try and post a pic of the 165 some time. Those are a nice tractor. Before we got the 1080 we almost bought a 285 with a loader. my dad got to the persons house and another person bought it for 8000. They took it right out west and sold it for 14000. it was in perfect condition and had only 2k hours on it. I guess i like the look of the 1080 and 1085 a little better though. Is it just me or are the mid sized masseys not as popular as other brands from the 60's and 70's? (like the 150,165, 175, 180, 285, 1080, 1085, 1100. etc)

Around here just about every farm had a 285. Some had loaders, some didn't but most of the guys had 285's weather or not they were MF otherwise. Right off the bat I can think of 3 neighbors that had one. Another neighbor has 2 265's (one with the smaller engine, one with the larger) and other neighbors had 135's, etc. We had a good massey dealer here though, so they were pretty popular.

The smaller ones are fine, they just asked too much from the 310's. For their size, they're pretty much maxed out from the factory.

That's a good part of the reason why they just can't compete with similarly sized tractrs of other brands at the pulls. The others have a lot more room to push the envelope. Built right they can be good, but I'd rather have a Cummins. We've got a dead 1755 in back that had engine troubles as well 8 years ago. I'd love to put a cummins in, but I never have time or $$$ to do it.
