I have my great uncle's WD45. I started driving it when I was 12 years old and that has been 45 years ago. I have a problem with the PTO and not sure where to start. I was bush hogging the other day and while sitting still and the pto turning, it made a loud popping sound and quit turning. Upon inspecting the pto I found the complete housing underneath busted and poring fluid out. I immediately stopped the tractor and pulled it to the shed, not knowing if something else was broken. Any suggestions as to where to start looking for further damage and parts to fix the tractor. It has been trouble free for years. It made no sound and was full of fluid prior to starting. Also any suggestions on what could have caused this. Thanks in advance for your help. Dennis

Going backwards - you would need to contact a tractor salvage place to find parts. Pull the PTO housing off the tractor's belly and look at the gear in the transmission that it engages. With a little luck, the kind I never have, you have only broken the PTO itself.

Once you do that, someone on the AC page would be better at explaining the parts replacement process. Some disassembly and reassembly may be required.

Have you looked over the bush hog as well? You probably hit something solid to cause such damage to the tractor. A WD-45 is a great tractor and one of the best made ever, but to put it nicely that PTO system never was the stoutest.

Running a bush hog puts a lot of jarring stress on a tractor's PTO. You could maybe make it safer for the tractor with an over-running clutch and a slip clutch.
