A friend has a 1994 furd F350 with a 460. He was heading into town last week and suddenly it puked coolant out of the catch tank and the temp gauge shot up. No water in the oil just compression in the cooling system. We are thinking blown head gasket. I have little experience with fords. Is the 460 known for head gasket problems?

sounds like it could be a thermostat stuck or an air bubble in the radiator, bad freeze plug or a water jacket is plugged sum where. If you dont have water in your oil good chance not a head gasket. Cant really say they have problems with head gaskets on the older ones at least I never have.

Why would it have water in oil if head gasket blew ? Does engine have a miss now? I'd pull the plugs , run compression and cylinder leakage test ,with the rad full and cap off . If you have any leakage you'll get bubbles out of the rad .

Thats what the plan is. I guess I was just posting to see if head gaskets are a weak point on the 460 or if the heads have a tendency to crack. I haven't seen the truck yet, he's going to haul it up this week and I'll take a look. This is the third engine he has had in the thing. I keep telling him to dump it and get a Chevy with a 454 or 8.1 if he has to have a big block.

I have close to 160,000 hard miles on my F250 . No problems yet . I have not seen many cracked heads or head gaskets come though my shop on these . Not to say it not possible .

No, the 460 is not known for Head Gasket problems. My 460 has never had an Head Gasket issue in 216,000 miles.Your statement that he has had "3" engines in this truck leaves a lot of unanswered questions about who determined these engines were ok for a retrofit, who did the installations etc. The Ford 460 was and is a dependable, strong pulling motor which if serviced regularly and taken care of will give many miles of trouble free performance. Any claims of poor performance or disatisfaction with the engines durability always has an underlying cause if the truth can be found out.

In my younger days I replaced the head gasket on one side of a 302 and was trying to be cheap and didn't get the head trued up. It did just what you are talking about and I put some metallic liquid glass in it and drove it hard for a long time afterward.

My 1977 Ford 460,C6 Automatic plus a three speed Brownie behind it was traded off, it had 241,000 miles, Last time I saw the old truck it had 270,000 and was still on the road, never had the heads off of it.
My next 460 was a 1983 model with a four speed stick and a 3.08 axle, I saw it recently and it has about 165,000 miles, still going very good.
