Snowplow installation

I am thinking of buying a used snowplow for my truck. The guy says it is setup to mount to my truck. How hard are these to install, and what equipment will I need? 3/4 GMC, Western Ultramount plow.

Manual, auto, HD cooling, limited slip diffs, 5,6 or 8 bolt rims?
A plough can shake and tear a truck apart depending....................

I bought a Diamond plow for my 89 Chevy 1 ton years back. Decided to put it on myself after getting a quote of $200 for the shop to put it on.

It had an engine-mounted belt driven pump and electric solenoid controlled valves that mounted on the fender. Mount the pump bracket, pump, extra pulley on the front of the crank, valve body on the inner fender, run the wiring, run the hoses, run the lighting harness, mount the push plates and head gear. Ruined all of one day and put a pretty good dent in another.

Mister Man, that was the hardest $200 I ever saved in my life! Even allowing for inflation, I'd NEVER go through that again.

With a quick-tatch and everything mounted on the head gear, it wouldn't be QUITE that bad, but not something I'd let myself in for if I had the cash to pay somebody half my age with twice the tools to do it.

Sounds like I should pay for it. Old saying, "do what you do best, hire the rest"

best done by someone else, i changed a western plow out on a 89 ford, put it on a 94 ford, had both trucks side by side, but it still took 2 1/2 days to get it all changed over and i had air wrenches and a welder handy, the original instalation took a truck equipment dealer 1/2 day to install it ,the main thing is make sure the guy gives you all the wiring harness, from the control buttons to the plow motor, as well as all brackets

Depends on your skill level and tools you have at hand.

I've had the same Western plow on about 4 or 5 assorted Chevy pickups and full size Blazers. I never thought it was that hard to do. Of course, the time it took probably lessened each time I changed it.

The hard part of switching plows to different trucks is wiring, especially the lighting. There's different kits, different pigtails, something different every year. It'll drive ya nuts. I think you can find some info on the Western website and if the trucks are real close to being the same (REAL CLOSE), You can do it.

(quoted from post at 06:06:47 08/08/09) Auto, HD 2500 8 bolt rims. Don't know about the diff, bought it used.

Look on the RPO sticker in the glovebox. G80 is for a locking rear.
