Restoring Oil Bath Air Cleaner

My oil bath air cleaner doesn't look like it has seen oil for decades, it is totally rusty on the inside. I have new steel wool filler coming but what is the best way to clean up the inside. I don't have a sand blaster. I was thinking of using a long screw driver to scrape out the majority of the rust and then using a rust coverter. Is there any problem using rust converter in contact with the oil? Thanks for the help.

Duane, there shouldnt be a problem but read the container for the rust preventive you buy. Its not going into the engine (hope-hope), just collecting dirt. I would use a steel brush if real bad or just a copper pad from the kitchen if its easy to scrape off. Dont like the gouge marks from tools.
You might be able to paint over the rust preventive and leave a near original finish. One spray can would do inside and out. Good luck

I pull the guts out of those dirty, messy, oil
bath air cleaners, go to the big NAPA filter book
and find a replacement element that fits nice
inside, You can"t see it from the outside, looks
original, and filters better!
