My local county fair is coming up in a few weeks and they have a contest for the tallest corn.

Well, driving past our fields,I noticed a few poking above the rest.Once in the field,my brother and mom guided me(by cell phone) to it(would have never found it myself).Measured at exactly 11 feet!! And that's the first one I've measured so far!!

Another thing I noticed is that the top of the ears on most plants are almost to my shoulders. I'm over 6 ft tall,so use your imagination.Never seen corn like this before.

I'll do some more scouting this weekend. There must be some 12 ft corn out there(LOL)!!!

Don't doubt a word you're saying about the height of your corn.

Sure would be nice to see a couple of photos of your corn.

All we see around here is garden corn about 6ft tall.

I went to Clermont IA two weeks ago to get a tractor. The corn I saw there made me wonder why we even farm at all in S KS. It was beautiful and high and green and thick and full....here, short, brown and you can see the next quarter through it. HATS OFF TO YOU GUYS UP NORTH. No wonder land brings jack squat here.

Same down here in SW Minnesota - the winner of the tallest stalk of corn contest at the county fair was 11 feet 7 inches.

I'm curious what tractor you may have purchased, but none of my business--wondering if it was at the antique club.

Anyway that tall corn took a pretty good hit with hail in alot of that neck of the woods. I have heard of 4 1/2 inch hail. I do not know that to be a fact, but the combines will never enter alot of the fields, (A FACT)

Be it of any value, the geese are going South already in some large flocks --never ever seen them this early before--probably at least a month and maybe two early. The old timers say early frost.

We were very lucky her in Garnavillo, no hail at all. I don't think there is a weed in the corn or bean fields this year, and the crops look better than a picture book. Oh heck yea we are all complaining anyway--but that is our job. Heard a farmer last week complaining that he wasn't going to have enough bin room with the good crop of corn. He lives around 8 miles from the Clayton grain termanal on the Mississippi. His GPS will testify that he is about 13 miles from another grain termanal on the Missippi River (McGregor). He does own two grain semis also.

And you thought your mother in law complained alot.

James, We have a test plot not too far from you in Ferris, TX.

You are right about it being short. It made around 105 bushels. That seems to be a normal year. Plots south of there ranged anywhere from 45-60 bushels. I wonder why the farmers there even try??

Think I attached a icture of my 5' 6" wife in front of our corn.

Not much corn around here to run you any competition. This has been a sad year for corn. Much is yellowed, 3 to 4 feet high, and sooooooo sad looking. Growth is uneven all over the fields. Cold weather in June, July, and lack of rain has been blamed. Even irrigated corn looks poorly. Bet yields are going to be down. Beans looking poorly too. This is west-central Michigan.

I was there the Friday it hailed but I came in behind the hail, I was probably just North of Des Moines while it was raining and storming. When I got there the ground was wet but rain was done and it was just getting very dark. Did not buy from the red power deal, just from an individual.

Our county fair does a tall corn contest in the grange hall. Most usually plant their corn special for the contest, where they can give it support, water and fertilizer to helpl it along. Seen some well over 16 feet tall.

I've some corn here in Inependence Ia that should be close to 13ft tall. It's not field corn though. Its some seed we got from Our Iowa magazine. Pretty neat stuff.

Tall corn? Try to get some over 15 feet...

Probably a silage variety, lots of silage chopped around here.

I used to plant silage corn that would be taller then the forage wagons.13- 15 ft tall.I only did that one year because the first 70mph wind storm we had it was flat on the ground.Nothing worse then trying to chop mangled twisted up flat corn. Now most eveything I grow is around 10 ft but stands real good.

My fault again and I apologize about my choice of words.

"All we see around here" [b:654c4848f0]in NE Texas[/b:654c4848f0] "is garden corn about 6ft tall."

You can tell which folks are raising a garden or a "truck patch" compared to those that are growing a cash crop.

Some of the larger fields are owned by ranchers raising corn for their cattle.

The ears on my corn are also higher than I've ever seen. Stalks average about ten feet. Not bad for what everyone thought would be a bad corn year.
