4.3 Chevy Vortec water pump?

Wife"s new (to us) Trail Blazer developed a noisy water pump, obviously wobbling. Took it back to dealer where we got it. They fixed it, said they put new water pump on. Looks like they had radiator shroud off, fan off, pulley, etc. But the large plate on the front of the engine looked untouched. Anyone familiar with that engine? Is that water pump small enough to hide behind the pulley? How much of a job is it to change it out? Book time is 3 hours, and they had it done in less than 2. If they had to remove plate on front of engine, I could easily understand the 3 hour book time, because all the stuff involved with that... But don"t think that plate came off. Any ideas?

To their credit, they didn"t have a bill for me when they turned it back to me. I"ve been happy with the way this dealer stands behind their cars.

most of G.M. vehicles with a v6 or larger engine have a external water pump that can be changed without removing too many parts as far as the engine is concerned I will look the pump up in a sec. to see for sure what pump it takes.

just looked at the pump it is a small unit that will most likely fit behind the pulley that is on it.if you try to look behind the pulley you may see the 5 bolts that hold it on. last one i did only took about 1 hour and it was the first one I encountered and made some mistakes on how it comes off.I thought it came apart at the plate behind it and almost made a big mistake before I looked at the pump.

the pump is under the pulley. GM labor time is 2.2hr. I think you got a good deal with the dealer fixing it. most used car mangers wont fix any thing. all and all not a bad truck. I work for a GM dealer the worst part of the job is getting the fan clutch out.

Thanks, Roy! Can see which bolts they had off around shroud, fan, etc. But that pump is apparently hidden behind pulley. So, I was a little confused. Could see that they hadn't taken off that front plate. That engine is so shrouded you can't tell it is an in-line 6. With the DOHcam setup, it's pretty wide, Thot it was a V6 until I got to looking real careful. By the way, it's a very smooth, peppy engine. Economy seems about the same as our 4.3 V6's in our other Blazers. So far, this Trail Blazer is a real impressive vehicle. Was real confused by 3 hours - book time for replacment. Must be they had a parts source with one on the shelf.

26, this is a independent used car dealer. Not GM dealer. Have bought three or 4 cars from him over the years. Some had minor issues like this, and they always took care of them, no charge. They know they have a repeat customer. And I have brought other buyers to them.
