Yup, riders on tractors is just fine.......
Our neighbors who my wife plays ball on the wife's team. The Grandmother attends our church and my co-worked married the neighbor's wife's sister.
They lost one of their three year old twin sons last Friday. The child had been riding in a buddy seat equipped with a seat belt. Beside his father in the cab of the tractor. Somehow inspite of the seatbelt and being in the cab. The child fell from the cab of the tractor. And was run over head to toe with a front wheel. As his Father backed up to a wagon in the field.

Real shame and I imagine Dad will be haunted the rest of his life. It's like saying guns kill people though. I imagine there is more to the story than the quick rundown.

Thoughts are with the family.

That's horrible.!! I have 3 baby brothers and 2 of them were screwing around when we were kids. One on a moped and the other driving a 4020, bike wipes out , 4020 back tire runs over brothers arm and squishes the bike. What luck!! And a lesson learned. I can't imagine what life would be like if he would have been killed. Boy did they get their a$$es beat after the docs picked all the gravel out of his flat arm.

A neighbor of ours once thought his 13 year old son was big enough to be left by himself with a 4020 and an 18' disc.

He wasn't.

That is a terrible reminder, and you always make no bones about it on this forum, just shows how vulnerable a person is, child or adult, when it comes to this machinery. Just hope that father and the family can find some way to cope with this, awful situation to be in to say the least.

We had something very similar here 20 years ago. 14 year old was plowing uphill in a alfalfa field. Those roots go deep, no rops on tractor. Kid ended up field pizza. I won't even let my dogs out when I am running a tractor, much less a kid. What the heck are they thinking?

Sounds like something aint right if the child was in a seat with a seat belt and the kid fell out of the cab and was run over? Something doesnt sound right.

Was the cab door open?
Was the kid wearing the seat belt?
Wouldnt the dad hear his kid climbing/or falling out of the seat?

So I guess because kids get killed on bicycles every year we stop them from riding bikes?Kids also get killed playing sports for fun stop all sports?Swimming and diving also claim the lives of children every year do we stop them from doing those too? Car wrecks kill kids stop them from riding in cars unless its to the doctor or to school all other trips are totally unncecessary?

Possibly the child was trying to get out and "help Dad" hook the wagon to the tractor's drawbar.
The 2nd seat was on the left side and the Father was turned to the right backing up. The child was thus out of sight and the Ralph was concentrating on backing up.
The cab door may have been ajar being "in & out" unhooking full wagon before hooking onto the empty wagon.

i once worked for a man that had son riding on fender of 4230 they hit ground hog hole bounced the son off.
dad ran over the son dad carried the son to house to late for help.
the tractor sat in hay field until a neighbor took the tractor to his shed.
tractor was soon traded for a new one.

Having been the victim of a farming accident (lost right foot in a grain auger when I was 10), I can only send prayers for the family and sit here shedding a tear for the tragic loss of the life of a child. I'm physically sick just thinking about this family and what they have to deal with right now.

Safety must be thought about and discussed DAILY. It only takes a split second to change a life forever.

These things are terrible, but it happens every so often.I feel for all involved, but prayers aint gonna help them dick all.
Seems like it can not be avoided no matter what.
If one's number comes up,its over.

I had a neighbor with 1 little boy 3 yrs old,the parents put him with some toys in a barnstall to keep him safe while working the cattle trough the system, checking up on him every 1/2 hr.
upon 1 of these checkups they discovered him hung up and dead as a door nail on a piece of baler twine that was hung over a board.

These where very responsible people, and where devastated.
Who to blame huh? His guardian angel?

Young people CAN die,old people HAVE to die.

I'd try to explain it to you, but as you admit, you don't understand.

In a nutshell, if ya never done nuthin, ya never learned nuthin. Sometimes $hit happens, tragic tho it is.

Other than tractors themselves, the worst offenders for dangerous pieces of equipment always seem to be old-fashioned corn pickers, mowers, and grain augers. Farming really is one of the most dangerous occupations in the world.

Will- with all due respect- the equipment is not the offender- it is an inanimate object. The offender is the operator. Until we as farmers realize that, we will continue to kill ourselves and loved ones by doing stupid things.

Tractors , combines , augers etc. are extremely dangerous. Amazed I was never killed farming as a child. Had many close calls.Poor guy , I really feel soryy for the kid and his Dad.
