MF 255 Power Steering

My MF 255 Power Steering is fine when I have the tractor at high RPM's but when idled down at lower RPM's the steering is practically gone. Not leaking fluid. Dealer says to replace the pump, but I have read that it is not always the problem that there may be other things involved (so why spend the money)but no one seems to be able to tell me exactly what the problem really is. Anyone else ever had this problem?

Had a weak steering on an mf20. One steering cylinder had a leak. I repacked the hyd cylinders the steering is much better now. Would be a cheaper fix than a new pump.

I have the same problems with my MF 255. I am now on my third power steering pump. In my case, I am adding to the problem by having a front end loader on the tractor which puts added stress on the power steering.

I haven"t found any alternative to just replacing the pump. When I took one of the old ones apart, it is made of aluminum and apparently the vanes get worn and there is no way to get it back where the pressure is what you need.

There is one thing you can try short of replacement. Take the reservoir off and turn the pressure screw in. That "might" help. If anyone else has a fix method I sure would like to know.

Even buying a pump from one of the aftermarket suppliers is expensive--around $300 or so.

I also have a loader on mine. It seems pretty good when you first start out with the thing COLD, although you can not just sit still and spin the steering wheel. As you work the tractor and get it warmed up it gets worse. It is fine just driving down the road or through the field, but as you idle it down to turn is when I have the problem. Do you really attribute the loader to being part of the problem? Guess I never really considered that.
