I need to bid on a rather large area to mow. The field has a lot of different shapes. Is there a way to try and find the area just looking? I think somone told me telephone poles are an acre if you put the distance on all four conrers the same. Anybody have a different way? Is this possible? will the milage driving around it do any good? Thanks Stan

Find the place, click the corners (shape), and the area is shown. Caution....... You could find yourself spending hours playing...

Your local ASCS (okay, they've changed the name umpteen times, it's now Farm Service Agency) has maps showing acreage for individual fields. Far's I know, they're public records........have always been so to me.

My handheld GPS unit will do calculate it, you just have to walk around the field. Or drive while holding it where it can get a good signal.

Hello 37 chief,
Go to tax office and they will have the info for you, You can get a copy for each parsel.

Benton-Millelacs FSA in central MN will not give you copies or any other info unless you have an uinterest in the property, rent it or own it. Kind of sickening, seemed to change after alot of smaller neweryounger farmers were coming in for a the aerial maps to locate land owners and possibly land aquisitions. Lot of the big boys lost some land and had increased competition for some of the rentable acreage, then the policy changed. Coincidence?

Try Terraserver.com or maps.live.com and it will let you measure a parcel on your computer. Might even give you topo depending on location. As others have said, you'll spend some time checking things out!

Not worth a darned with dialup though. I really could have used it today too. Had to go back to the FSA office and straighten something out. Seems that a field of corn that I'd planted on some newly rented ground wasn't entirely owned by the guy I rented it from. His grandson owns the north end of it. About 3 acres is what we guessed it to be. The grandson was right there when I plowed and planted it,so I guess he's OK with it. Just caused a mess for USDA.

Hey Greyhorse,

If you don't mind the asking, which hand held do you have and have you ever check to see just how close it is? Been thinking one of them would be a good deal if they are really close.

I have a Garmin Etrex Legend that will do it. One of the best Christmas gifts I ever got. It will measure the acreage. The other thing I like is that it will also give you a mph reading. I use the MPH for calibrating the sprayer. I have checked the GPS, against the FSA, and against Google Planimeter. They are all pretty close within a half acre of each other.

Use this website:

http://websoilsurvey.nrcs.usda.gov/app/WebSoilSurvey.aspx

You can zoom into the field, then create a AOI (Area Of Interest) on top of the field. It will tell you the acreage and tell you the soil type(s) to boot.
