Farmall M needs work

Hey, I'm new on this list and this is my first time writing in, this is also my first tractor.
I am buying a International Farmall McCormick M
from a hobby farmer across the section for $100 and it was running with a bad Clutch when it was park. It has been siting for about five our six years and in the mean while the carburetor was swipe. So I'm looking for a Carburetor and a clutch, I was wondering were would be the best and cheapest place to find them.

I was also wondering how hard a clutch would be to put in????? I know I'm going to half to split the tractor, I don't have any kinds of lifts or any thing.

Thanks
Coyote

the last clutch i bought i got from mike at steel wheel ranch, for a super m. had it in a couple days. came with clutch, disc, throw-out bearing and pilot bearing. if i remember it was around 200 dollars. they prolly sell them here on this site too. for a carb, give rusty farmall a shout, he posts here a lot. he can set you up with a good rebuilt one. whlie your in there, i'd recommemd changing the seal on the input shaft to the trans and also the seal on the belly pump drive. when the belly pump is out, put new seals in there too. a lot easier to do it now. for an engine hoist, you can rent one for a couple days pretty cheap. pick up a repair manual too, makes the job a little easier.

You do not have to split a H or M to change clutch. Take HYD pump out bottom if has one and split trans input shaft and change it.

The archives on this site will give you considerable information on taking out the belly-pump hydraulic system. Before you attempt that pump removal, read up on it, and find a strong helper. It is heavier than you think it will be.

You don"t have to strain yourself to get that pump out, you can do it easily with threaded rod and some nuts. Replace the bolts holding the pump in one by one with a 2" piece of threaded rod. use two nuts on the end jambed together to get it to seat. Remove the nuts and then put on a washer and nut and run them all of the way up. When you get all the bolts replaced with rod, take turns loosening the nuts to lower the pump. You can reinstall the pump reversing the actions.

Before you attempt to replace the clutch find out what symptons it has and make sure it is properly adjusted before replacing it.

I've seen many a clutch replaced because the person replacing it was not educated on the adjustment it needed to work properly.

But like the others have mentioned, you don't have to split a Farmall H or M to replace the clutch, just drop the belly pump if it applies to your tractor and drop the clutch shaft then unbolt the pressure plate.

Watch your fingers during this process, you can get them pinched quite easily.

I forgot to mention in my first reply.

When you replace the clutch be sure to replace the throwout bearing since you have it all apart and if it's got a pilot bearing in the center of the flywheel replace that also.

Good luck with your M. I'm working on a '49 M. Here are some pics, where I started at at where I'm at now. Still working on it and its going pretty good so far.
