Gear Teeth Repair? Worth Doing?

I have heard of teeth repair by building up with weld metal, and then cutting in a new tooth. Not having welding equipment, someone would have to do it for me. Is it better and cheaper to weld or should I look for a good but costly gear.

It's a much more complicated process than you have indicated........tolerances, heat treatment, matching gears, etc. Machine shop quoted me $1000 about 10 years ago to fix one out of a gear box on a Taruup mower/conditioner; new one was no longer available. Given the age of the thing and acres it'd been over, I just scrapped it.

It would need to be an awfully special, unavailable gear...
I think I'd buy the new gear if it was available or scrap the machine if new or used is not a viable option.

Depends on the application. Speed, load on the gear, availability of a used or new one. If you can find a machine shop experienbces in making gears it may not be that expensive to get a new one made. I have repaired a few with no machine tools, just a file and die grinder, but they ran very slowly. Lots of factors to consider.

Replacement gear no longer available ?
There are companys that make ONLY GEARS, of
various types and sizes. (UNION GEAR and SPROCKET
is one that comes to mind, another is LYNN GEAR)
catalogs are available, and those , and other
professional gear outfits can custom make a
special gear cheaper than a local machine shop
because they already have the expertise and the
special equipment/machines. An industrial
bearing house can help you with this. Start with
the yellow pages-you want places that sell
INDUSTRIAL belts-bearings-chain-sprockets.
