Hot corn in bin question

About 2 months ago I took off the peak of corn in the bin. I had the fan blowing for about 6 weeks before removing peak. Leveled out the corn on top and turned the fan on for another 4 weeks. Then I tested the top corn and it tested 15.0 so I shut the fan off. I went down Monday and stepped in to the corn which was fine, but when I got to the center OH OH. There the corn was black for about 2 feet down. All the rest is fine. I dug the center out and spread it around the other corn and turned the fan back on.
Now the next problem is do I take the corn out of the center hole and hope it does not plug or start to take it out of the door to get the best corn out first, I would kind of like to mix in the bad with the good to reduce dockage. I spread out about 3-4 bushel on top, from the center, which will come out the door if I do it that way. Which would be the best way to mix or get rid of the bad corn. This is the first time I have spoiled any corn in this bin, but then again there is the first time for anything.

In my opinion, the best way is to draw the corn down the center and out the auger. The center is probably where all the spoiled corn is anyway. All you can do is hope that it won't plug the auger. At least you've got the door for plan B. Unload all the bad corn and feed it to your animals. Please don't try to sell it to me for my animals.

I've read that if you send it thru a continuous dryer it will blow off the mold and you can then mix it, unless it is stained. The alternative is to contact a spoiled grain buyer or feed it to your livestock.

i have encounterd this problem once before. I would take it out the center it will mix the good and bad corn better. Chances are if its gonna plug up the well its all ready done it.NOt that it couldnt plug it as you unload but Ive found that the bin auger usually has enough umph to chop it up but we got a prety good sized motor on our bin tho. If you can shovel it around its prolly not packed to bad. Takin it out the door really is a pain and doesnt mix the corn very well and then have more bad corn stuck in the middle to try and deal with and might get packe in there hard that putin in your sweep becomes an issue then. I would definately try to mix it. Youll still gat a little dock but not as bad.

Is this true? You are walking around in that bin, on top of the corn? Hope you have a nice life insurance policy for your widow and orphan children.
Only two guys killed here in SD in the past year
suffocated in bins when they went down in the corn.
Please tell me you are wearing a safety harness and have someone keeping a taut line on you.

GordoSD I have not taken any corn out of the bin therefore there it not a hollow spot under the center of the bin. I appreciate your concern but I know better than to walk on corn that is stuck and there is a hollow spot underneath. Thank you for you information. I will be careful when unloading the bin. Just wondering how to unload with the lest amount of damage in the load..thanks again

Lot of hot corn around here this winter and spring, a few guys plugged up their unload augers. A vacualator might be the way to go, but a center unload might mix it alright too. We have rented a vaculator several times for our cement floor bins they usually run around 150 a day and .o2 a bushel. They blow out any bugs and mold and mix up the grain nice. One problem this year on some dry corn though is it cracked some of it if you didnt keep it running full. It never use to be much of a problem having some cracked corn or a few moldy kernals, but ethanol plants are finicky customers, and the elavator isnt coming up on the short end so they pass the discounts on to you. Good luck with it and hope you get it out ok.

Been There. I have one bin that has that problem regularly. Mostly because we dump all dried corn from the dryer into that bin and use transfer augers to move grain to adjoining bins. Our transfer augers have cleaning units on them to remove those fines and cracked kernels which otherwise accumulate in the center core. One trick that really helps if you want to prevent your center sump from plugging in the future is to place an old section of ear corn tunnel over the sump before filling.

My experience has been in the summer corn should be taken down to 13 percent you lose some weight but no spoilage occurs.
