Ford 800 5 speed

Can anyone explain to me how to shift this thing. I have been driving it but never know what gear I'm in.
I have reproduction operators manual and it is no help.

Look at it like this. The lever has three posistions each way. Forward, center and back and top, middle and down. Foward or back select gears while center is neutral. In Neutral (center) you can move the shifter up or down into top, middle or down. Each posistion here again gives you two gears if you move the shifter forward or back.
It is easier than it sounds.

If you are old enough to remember the old column shift in cars or trucks it works on the same principle. This shifter is just out the top instead of the side.

The shifter moves up and down in neutral.

With the shifter all the way up; back is R and forward is 3rd.

Push the shifter down just a little while in neutral and back is 1st and forward is 2nd.

Pushing the shifter all the way down while in neutral and back is 5th and forward is 4th.

The hardest gears to find at first is 1st and 2nd because you have a tendency to push the shifter all the way down but you will get use to it.

Thanks again. I've found 1st and 2nd for the first time. I was going all up or all down and didn't realize it had the MIDDLE position. I just went out and tried it and I'm now a happy camper.

Ford 5 speed was the handiest transmission shift pattern ever devised for a loader tractor. Joe
