My wife took this picture in our front yard. I was laying in wait for the woodchucks who've been ravaging our garden, when our Maine Coon cat decided I needed some coaching. She came over and took command of the situation.

We have two of them. Here's a pic of Mattie. She was given to us when the former owner's claimed she couldn't get along with her husband. I think they headed to splitsville is the real reason. We've had her 5 years. The other cat is a Calico long haired that showed up at the front door looking fo something to eat. I think her owners moved away and left her. Hal

Nice rifle. What caliber is good for woodchucks? And GET YOUR FINGER OUT OF YOUR EAR!

You cat is just trying to get warm in this cool weather we're having.

I would like to have some cats around the farm but we have distemper on this place so any cat we bring in gets sick and eventually disappears. When our daughter was still home she somehow caught all the cats and had them nnalert for distemper. In a couple of years we had over thirty healthy cats running around here, and there wasn't a rat or mouse to be found. When she left, so did the cats. Jim

varmint hunting myself, skunks. a pack moved into a scope of woods next to my hay field and come out every evening at dusk to feed. killed 5 in 1 evening. can a skunk play possum? went back the next morning to bury and only found 2, the others had disappeared. sure they were dead as i shot them multiple times after they were down. any way there were none last night at dusk when i went down there. i hunted them off of my tractor as they paid no attention to it when it neared them. i used a 22 pistol with long rifle hollow points. nice cat, my wife loves them, i tolerate them.

Hi Ron,

Woodchucks are tough to kill, particularly the big ones. Full-power loads in my .22-250 would turn any woodchuck inside-out, but I have too many neighbors who would be disturbed by the racket. I handload the .22-250 down to about 2000 fps, which makes for a very accurate but not very lethal load. Head shots are a must for clean kills.

I never tasted any, but had a fella tell me they are better than chicken in chow mein. They are, however great varmits for staying in practice. We call them "Ditch Cougars".

It sort of depends what you want to accomplish. Most varmint hunters keep a tally and only count the kills that don't make it back into their holes. For them something small but blistering fast is the tool of choice. If you have a dog that likes to dine on stinky rotten woodchuck something small that administers a lethal wound but slowly enough that the die underground makes sense for problem 'chucks around the farm.

I think why some people don't like cats is they can't control them. We have three of our own, and one of the neighbors cats. Stan

I had a cat one time that would come and tell me if a coon or a possum was around. And would go with me when I shot it and just watch.

I thought about traing it to hunt deer since it is not illegal to use a cat to hunt deer.

But alas the old friend dissappeared. Coyotes?

In California we have thousands of cats that hunt deer. We call them Mt. Lions. They are really difficult to train though.

My conibear 220 trap got more ground hogs this year than I ever got before laying in wait with my gun. Just put it over the hole and it gets them wether they go in or out. I have not lost a cat yet either with it.

A lot of people I know have house cats, but they're nothing near as great as the old farm cats we have that grew up there as kittens or were rescued after being dumped by somebody. Most loyal cats of all time.
