Why would I ever expect anything to go right. Main bearings?

Case gas 159 c.i. dropped off block and head at machine shop yesterday. Today I call about parts etc. and tell him the thrust was out of spec. and we'd need a wider main to take up the thrust. He looks and only one width is available for thrust. He says thrust surface on crank is smooth. Other than welding and regrinding the crank has anyone ever encountered this and have a less expensive alternative.

If the trust bearing is a 3 piece,2 shells and 4 half moons for the trust part,
Then a guy can machine new half moons out of a piece of thick wall brass tubing to fit the crank.

I have done this on a couple of occasions where the wear was out of specs.

It could be done on a 1 piece brg to,but takes more work, cause the 1/2 moons need to be doweled in place in the block and the shells need to be modefied as well.

The bearing is a two piece with the shoulders taking the thrust. I was thinking of drilling the thrust face and inserting copper rivets with the appropriate face thickness on one side. The full plain side of the bearing facing the flywheel since the pressure of clutch disengagement would be the largest thrust load. I think I'm looking to take up approx. .025". Don't know if shifting the crank forward .025" would create any problems. This isn't a tractor that's going to see a huge amount of working hours.

YOU DIDNT SAY HOW MUCH EXTRA THRUST MOVEMENT YOU HAVE, BUT WE WOULD WELD UP THRUSTS ON CRANKS ALOT , IF A FEW THOUSANDTHS OUT SOMETIMES WE'D OFFSET THE CAP TOWARDS THE FRONT THAT AMOUNT, BUT EACH CASE IS DIFFERENT. MIGHT CHECK AROUND ,SOME BRG COMPANIES HAVE O.S. THRUST AVAILABLE FOR MANY ENGINES, BUT YOULL HAVE TO GET THE FLANGE GROUND TO FIT IF THATS THE CASE.

Silver solder (or soft solder) a .020 brass shim to the existing bearing on the rear (or .010 on both!) JimN

id get the thrust welded if theres no oversize thrust available, some reason i dont like the rivet idea in the long run,, if you had your crank ground they should have measured the thrust , but good luck . old timer used to tell me ,, " why is ther not time to do it right the first time ,but allways time to do it right the second time. look , that thrust is allready putting the crank to far forward ,its worn on the side the clutch pushes on... lucas
