Onion sets

Can anyone tell me how long onion sets will keep? I was in a store the other day & they were closing there garden center for the year & were giving away onion sets. Can I keep them until next year? A couple have started to sprout in the bag but the rest seem ok. Gerald

I would make a raised bed, start them now and keep them well watered. In fall you can cover them in heavy leaf or straw mulch and harvest some in winter. Uncover whatever is left in spring and let them take off again.

My wife uses onion plants.She says sets wont produce a large enough onion.
