Anyone plant water mellons this year? Maybe you can tell me why a plant will have a good mellon, and on the next vine the mellon starts to form about a inch long, and turns black, and dies. Thanks stan

I am sorry, lord I apologize, but I think there has been a new government "Czar" of watermelons appointed. I suggest you contact the Office of Watermelons Czar, Washington D.C. .

Actually, you local University Extension office could help.

Good luck.

I don't know why they do that but our watermelons have a large amount of vines this year and not that many melons on them. They sure are sweet though. We have had so much rain the last week or so that some are splitting.

i grow the small 'sugar baby' watermelons. just about 6-8 lbs and very sweet. anyway, as far the turning black, i don't know. i have had that happen also. it could be a melon blight. i just prune off the dying/dead melon. after the melon plant is up, water and fertilize and then when the melon is growing, another good watering and fertilizing with a manure tea mix or water soluable fertilizer. try to keep the water off the leaves, if possible.

I have had some of that the last 2 seasons, but it has been extremely dry on them. I believe that to be my problem. It is very important to rotate your melons and not plant in the same spot year after year.

I don't have room to grow them, but I would do what's been suggested is to call your local county extension agent. My neighbor's family grows them over on the Eastern shore of MD where the soil is sandy and here's a pic of the one he gave me. Sure was good too. Hal

have any of you ever heard of yellow meated watermellons,I don't mean cantelopes, muskmellons,or any of these mellons.when I was a boy working on a farm in central Ga. they were grown, along with the red meated kind.they were sweeter than the red ones.if someone could give me the name of them, and perhaps where I may locate the seeds I would appreciate the info.I am located in n.e fla.thanks

I used to work at the Farmers Auction in Laurel, Delaware. We used to call them "yellow meats" and I think maybe "yellow dolls" (maybe a smaller size??) Its been a while (20years) so the memory has faded a bit. Not too many grew them but usually at least one farm would bring some thru. I always thought the sugar babies were a good melon. At that time "seedless" were a novelty and only a few had them. Sometimes they got a good price other times no better than any other melon since no one knew much about them.

many years ago, i grew yellow and orange meat watermelons. not really much of a market for them. kinda oddity, although they are very sweet, but generally meally and have hollow heart like big black diamonds. sugar baby and charleston greys and big jubilee stripes are very popular. i absolutely detest seedless watermelons. they have no flavor compared to seeded melons.

If the female (the melon) does not get pollinated then the plant will abort it...

thanks guys for the info.I am planning on stopping by the ag ext.office today.I would like to plant some next year,my wife has never even heard of them(she's a city girl).we are located in jacksonville, fla, out by JIA.cw

A good source for watermelon seed is Willhite Seed in Poolville, Tx. http://www.willhiteseed.com/
I have tried one called Willhite Tendergold and it was great tasting. They have many varieties of yellow meat melons.
