Further question regarding iron valve guides

My previous question about self installed valve guides brought a mix of replies and a further question about the need to ream guides to size. I've installed lots of bronze valve guides and never needed to ream one to proper size. If I purchase a complete valve job kit valves, springs, guides etc. won't the guides be sized to match the valves? If I give the machine shop a clean head with new guides and valves shouldn't they charge less for a grind job? It also allows me to look at their work when I assemble the springs and keepers.

there is a bunch more to your valve job than what you can do yourself before you take it to your machine shop---if you owned a seat grinder, reamers, mag-flux,etc-& etc--& knew how to make your new valve & new guide all hit on the seat in your old head in center, with proper contact point on seat--you could do it all yourself--sorry, but there is more to it/parts in kit] The machine shop i use would run me off if they thought i would "check up on them" & i don't have the equipment to do so anyhow---

around here it's not too expensive to get machine work done on heads and I have always thought it was worth the money. having to tear down a motor again to fix something would make it worth the price.

I have done lots of cast iron guide replacement and valve jobs and after pressing guides in the heads all I have ever done required reaming to size before precision grinding can be done. mEl

depends on your engine that you never posted ,now i want to know engine you have.some wont need reaming, depends. lucas

Lucasboy it's a 159 c.i. gasser out of a Case. The tag on the tractor says 580ck but someone on this site says it's a 530ck.

You question is dependant on many things, in your case , the engine in question is DESIGNED to have the guide sized to the stem when the guide is pressed in...I.E. when properly installed the guide is to spec when pressed in. Most automotive applications require reaming or burnishing to size prior to cutting seats, as the guides are undersize as delivered, and installed....hope this helps Shawn

Well I had to give it a try and the first try snapped the guide. The guy at the machine shop chuckled, said there's no absolute method of removal. Press, chatter gun sometimes they have to be drilled out. Live and learn, if you're lucky.
