2002 Ford F-350

I have a 2002 F-350 with a Powerstroke Diesel. The truck has 40,000 miles on it. I noticed while towing a load of hay home today that the battery light came on. When I arrived home I tested the batteries. Each battery tested 12.1 volts. These are the original batteries. What is the voltage reading for a good battery?

Thanks,

12.6 is a perfect battery. 12 volt batterys have 6 cells that produce 2.1 volts each. The battery light on makes me have a concern for the alternator. check the voltage while the truck is running. Should be between 13.2 to 14.5volts dc.

those things are known for alt. lights even when charging but it will eventually go out very cheep to have fixed at a alt. shop but one off the shelf is pricey. check around for a rebuilder near you and tell them what is going on bet it will be alot less than at the parts store.

If a battery had just been charging before the vehicle was shut off it should read nearly 13V.

If you had somne lights on or something to remove the "surface charge" it should read 12.6 if fully charged.

12.1 is a bit low.

Your alternator is most likely the cause of the light coming on indicating a charge malfunction There is no lamp to indicate a bad battery.

I tested the alternator and it tested 11.7 volts. So, I think the alternator is the problem. Is that your opinion?

WHY is he checking it with the engine "OFF" to determine if the alternator is bad???????????

Would make MUCH more sense to check the CHARGING voltage, which should be 14.5 Volts, give or take a quarter of a Volt or so.
