Always like to see pictures of a project.

Sizing them can be a little tricky, and doing it depends on what you can scour araound and find on your computer for software to size them. YOu may have somethign on there or not.

Two issues. Resolution and size.

Many digital cameeras will let you choose the resolution. High resolution is for photos that you want to print and have them look like snapshots from film negatives would. Trick is, that's a pretty big electronic file for that photo. If the camera allows it you could take the picture at a lower resolution, but a lot of the photo software (it usually comes with the camera) has somewhere in it a "Save for Web" option, that reduces the resolution to a level that might not be suitable for printing a nice snapshot, but is perfectly adequate for a nice poic on the web. In doing so, it also reduces the size of the file so that it loads quickly on a web page (folks on dial-up really appreciate that!).

As far as size, the software will also allow you to change the outside dimensions of the picture. 600 pixels wide works pretty well on YT -- it doesn't make the picture so wide that you have to scroll back and forth across to see it all.

If there's a point of detail, most software will also have a function to let you crop/zoom in to the part of the picture you want.

If yo've got those functions somewhere in your software, my usual drill is to crop first (if necessary), then change the size, and last change the resolution, at which point you need to save the modified picture file a new name. If it was **.jpg, I usually name the modified file **web.jpg.

Another tool for resizing images is the "convert" program included with Image Magick. In typical UNIX fashion, it is strictly a command-line tool but it is very powerful. Among other things, it can resize images, convert them from one format to another, and adjust the image quality of JPEGs. The beauty of using a command-line tool is that once you've figured out the parameters you want to use, you can write a DOS batch program that will convert dozens or even hundreds of images in one shot.

When resizing an image for the web, consider that most PCs use a display resolution of around 1024x768 pixels. Images larger than that may not fit on the viewer's screen, while images smaller than around 500x500 pixels are going to be small and hard to view.

Reducing the JPEG quality will make the file size smaller so it loads faster over dialup, but will not significantly affect the quality of the picture when viewed on-screen.

If your pictures won't post do to their size then email them to yourself and redownload them. Then they will post. Hal
PS: This is 480 X 640 pixels.

I Like the KISS method of things (keep it simple sucker).

For me, the simplest way is to save your pics in a folder in the size that they are originally. Make an empty folder. Then select the pics (usually as many as you want), right click and select "send" or "send by email". A little window will pop and tell you they are humongous and ask if you want to resize. Say yes and a fresh email will pop up with all the pics shrunk to a friendlier size. Hilight them, right click, click "copy", right click over the empty folder, right click and click paste. All will be in the new folder in the small size and you will still have the originals to play with later.

I've found modern view to be the easiest wayto upload pics. Just click upload photo and do what it says.

Have fun,

Dave
