Discovered a wasp nest along the edge of the pool last night. Got stung 4 times in the face.Got up early this morning and dawned the sandblasting gear and removed the nest into a plastic bag and killed the wasps that where in the nest. There was only a few in the nest. I go back to the pool and I see about 25-30 wasps flying around the the nest location (not happy i'm thinking). It has been a hour since I did this and they are still there. Will these guys take off or rebuild?? what's my next step?
Thanks
Ron

Why didnt you just by some wasp killer spray or use brake cleaner and kill them first at a distance and then use a broom to knock it out.

I use starter fluid or brake cleaner. Get them at night if they are that agressive. We may be wrong but brake cleaner (or starter fluid) is better than using pesticides. I use Windex on ants that get into the house.

Actually I did try some brake cleaner last night ,but it only made them upset,so I figured that it would be best to remove the nest, I have company coming over tomorrow for a swim so I wanted them gone. I might try some cleaner on the ones flying around. It didn't slow them down last night. Thanks ron

RVS , if you wanna get rid of a bees nest , you do it when they are all at home , not away . Yes I imagine they are mad . I"d suggest spraying some killer over that area . Next time , have a helper & do your nest picking at dark hours with no lighting or you wil get hit .

i agree, get em at night when they are all at home.. wasp spray is best ,but ive used other shop chemicals , gasoline being one of my favorites. they ones you didnt get will eventually leave ,or nest nearby..lucas

I had a good sized nest under one of the eaves. About 8PM I doused them with wasp killer. Like some of the others said, you get them in one attempt by waiting until dusk by spraying them then. If you knock the nest down during the day, they get defensive and will probably rebuild.

ya'll ain't gonna believe this, but i used to work with a fellow that would reach up or get on a ladder and with NO protective gear or spray, would actually hand pick the nest off while there were wasp on it. the wasps looked ready to fly but did not and he would remove the nest gently and put on the ground and crush it. never got stung that i ever knew of and he done many while we were on the job together. amazing, or he had nerves of steel or maybe just crazy. i sure would not try it. the further away i am from wasps, the better. believe it or not!

If you use spray. Make sure you have a full can and it works. I got into a fight onetime and ran out half way through the battle. Good thing I could still run fast back then.

Life history of a wasp nest.

Late last year, the last bunch of larvae were fed better to develop into queens.

They mated last year and hibernated through the winter.

A queen this year. This spring, when she woke up, she started her nest from scratch. Did everything herself until first offspring hatched into flying wasps.

Queen lays further eggs and hatched workers build further as season progresses.

Cycle completes in autumn when newly-mated queens go into hibernation.

Result is - if you get the queen they cannot rebuild.

I got in trouble in 5th grade for using spray chain lube on a yellow jacket nest. Dad wasn't real happy about the black spot on the wall.

I tried to get him to see that the black ball on the ground was the yellow jacket nest and I killed all the yellow jackets. He still wasn't impressed.

Point was, that stuff worked.

Ether. Brake cleaner doesn't burn anymore. Soak it good, then set it off with a torch of some kind. If you soak it good enough, it will explode...

I worked at a food processing factory a few years ago. Since anything had to be food grade we couldn't use insecticide on wasps. We mixed Dawn dish soap in water and threw it on them. It would kill them as well as gasoline and was not hazardous. I keep a 1 gallon pump up sprayer with about 10 OZ of Dawn and filled with water. It works well and I can spray from a distance.

I use dish washing soap (dawn, Palmolive etc),mix it water, use a lot of soap, I don't spray, just throw it up on them from a cup, works every time. it is best to do it night when most of the wasp are on the nest. saw this some time ago on country living

My son and I ran in to a large wasp nest getting into our deer stand last year [in the dark]. I used the but of the gun on the nest right before I ran down the ladder. By the way why are you using my initials? RAB Ronald Allen Berry

You can easily make a remote spraying tool by attaching a can of wasp spray and a strap hinge near the end of a 1" X 2" board such as a furring strip. A string fastens to the strap hinge which is pulled over onto the spray button to dispense the spray from a few feet from the nest, i.e. the length of the board.

My brother in law says if you hold your breath your pores close up and wasp can't sting you. He swears its true. I haven't tried it. Wish some of you'all would and let me know.

I've haven't heard that one yet, but I have read that if you remain absolutely still without any movement whatsoever they can't find you as they sense by movement.

I have sprayed hornet nests a foot in diameter and never got stung by doing it this way; wait until dark when all the critters are in the nest and least active. Get a good flashlight turn it on and prop it a distance away to shine on the nest so you can see it. Stand a ways away from the flashlight and nest in a dark area so you aren't seen. Have a full can of good jetspray bee killer and soak the nest thoroughly.

If you spray and/or remove a nest when some are "not at home" when they come home they will bother you.

CRC brand Lectromotive Electrical parts cleaner has the highest deadly effect I have ever witnessed. The hornets/wasps/bees just fold up and drop like roofing nails. It is pretty non toxic to humans and pets and dissipates in a few seconds.
In the cool of the night, just go spray them. JimN

WD 40 works very well . I use a pump bottle the drop like lead balloons when hit . My father used to use diesel with a bit of used motor oil in his hand sprayer . Same effect as the WD 40 .

Always check the wind direction before getting involved with flying, stinging insects.

They fly slower into a headwind.

Nice to know if something goes wrong. . .
