I'm trying to disconnect a bush hog thats been on a tractor ('53 jubilee) for years and years.
The button was stuck so I oiled it and tapped it with a hammer. It didnt take much to get it back moving freely. Now it springs back and forth like it should. But when you press the button and pull the shaft out, nothing..... I tried everything, twisting the button a little, pressing it in further, or not as far, pull pull tug tug, nothing. It is stuck. Well, you can see it moving about 1/8" or so, proving that its not just simply rusted together. What can I do?

Last time I had that happen, was with a post hole digger, newer release mechanism, but the fine/loose rust, just jammed up the works, person who hooked it up should have wire brushed the coupler on the post hole digger, it took a 6 foot bar and an afternoon to get it apart, cannot imagine what it would have been like if it was left on and bonded together. Heat is probably not an option, grease, and or changing the qualities of the metal, I would suggest an industrial penetrant like Free-All, by Gasoila, make sure that release in is out or in the unlocked position and get some sort of a bar in there, hard rubber mallet, for some impact and vibration, keep on er, should come apart with some elbow grease.

Run the tractor for a while to see if it loosens the connection. Make sure the button is engaged, though. If that doesn't work, try to rig up a come-along and pull from the gearbox on the mower.

Can you get tyre lever or similar behind it to get a little more pressure than you can assert, I have to do that with one of mine. you may have a build up of rust.

probably your shaft is froze where they slide together...unhook bush hog and drive tractor forward...
