Electrical short on Massey Harris tractor

Hello - I am working on getting an old Massey Harris 22 running again and it is still on the 6 volt system. The motor is not stuck at all and turns over well by hand. When I try to start it the motor turns over very slowly even though the battery is fully charged. I tried using another starter from another running tractor of the same make and model. The thin copper pipe which goes from the canister on the engine to the oil pressure gauge gets extremely hot during the cranking and it gets hot within seconds. So I know its a severe short but I can't figure out what is causing the short. Nothing else gets hot at all. There are absolutely no live wires touching the pipe either. Can anyone help shed some light on this? - Dean

I would think you have a ground problem. Try conecting the ground cable directly to the engine block.

Its not a short, its an open. The ground cable from the battery probably goes to the dash, and then the dash is supposed to be grounded to the engine. If you cure the open in that circuit, then it will crank good and the temperature gauge tube won't be trying to carry a few hundred amps starter current.

sounds to me like the only "ground" you have to the battery is thru the oil pressure line to the gauge to the dash to the battery.
make sure the battery ground cable is connected to the engine and all rust and corrosion is cleaned from that spot.

Actually when I got the tractor it had no ground cable at all so I put a ground cable to the dash and not the engine. So I will install the ground cable to the engine instead and hopefully that will fix the problem. Thanks for your help guys - I appreciate it.

Besides making sure the connections are clean, be sure both the battery cables to the starter are fat. Cables from the wallyworld kiosk won't work at 6 volts. You need 0 or 00 to work good at 6 volts.
