Wow!

Nasty, nasty stuff. Will feed this crap when and if I just can't possibly get to anything better.

Good news is that it is now off the field. :>(

Yeah, what do you do. The bad part is when it goes to heck like that you have more invested getting it off the field than you do with good hay that you put up right. Do you feed a few bales at a time?? If so you can probably put one in the mix each time or set one in loose and let them eat it and use what they don t eat for bedding. But from the pictures that hay don t look that bad. Remember, you ain t milking em.

Boy, you must have everything set and clicking just right on that 855. The three bales in the picture all look the same:)

If I needed it I'd probably feed it through the fall before it got too cold out... and they can still pick some on their own. Otherwise with a lot of supplimental feed later on. It's still roughage.

When that happens to me, I try and mix the hay. For example, I'll put out three good bales, two canary hay bales, and one dusty/rained on bale. They fill themselves on the good and then pick at the others for a day and usually do a pretty good job of cleaning up everything.

Heck, those bales ain't bad at all. I've made bales that are black and the cows still clean them up.

You know, I never could figure out some of the logic behind a tub grinder. Cows are supposed to have teeth. If you grind up low quality hay that doesn't change the feed value, just puts it in smaller pieces, maybe shakes some dust out of it, definitely uses fuel. Angus and Hereford cows are spoiled if they ever see anything too good.

I have goten cows to eat sorry hay by taking about a gallon of that molasses based feed supplement, mixing 2-3 gallons of water, then pouring it on the flat side of the bale. Let it soak in a little, then the cows will eat most of it. Alternate with good hay.

Did you ever hear the old adage "Venison is just as good as the amount of pork you put into it."? The tub grinder / TMR is for mixing bad feed with good feed (or multiple kinds of good feed).

Notice, I did say "some of the logic". It's maybe the economics of it that I have trouble with. That and the fact that when you mix venison and pork you still end up with venison and pork.

You think that looks bad, there is a local guy who had a real nice tall, thick first cutting he laid down awhile back. Got lots of rain on it, turned it twice and got more rain. By now it is grown over with the second cutting and today he is out there cutting it, running over the old rows and mixing it together. He not only lost a big first cutting, but now his second will be all messed up with the old laying in with it. To top it all off, he finished cutting it about 4:00 pm. and by 6:00 we had 1 1/4 inches of rain in a half hour. Still raining off and on.

Those are the nicest looking bales I have ever seen come out of a chainer! The bale quality not the hay quality I mean. What model is that?
