O/T Mangeing a Greenhouse

I only manage my own. I have a 16'x 48' hoop house i built last year a little at a time.I do a little of vegetable plants and some experimental stuff to see what might actually be worth growing in the winter.

We had a greenhouse operation for years when I was growing up. We raised poinsettias, bedding plants, and fall mums. It's a good way to work real hard and not make a lot of money. I was always envious of the row crop farmers with all the mechanization because about all we did was by hand. We did well for a small operation for a long time, but the price of plastics and fuel oil started going up about the time we got out. I don't know how the people are hanging on now as expensive as the inputs are now. I raise livestock now and grow some stuff for feed, and I don't miss all that manual labor and hand watering. It was almost as confining as a dairy.

Nope, not me.

However I did work for one company to help re-skin 8 units and a double gutter connected unit.

Also worked for them as a seasonal driver delivering poinsettias.

Applied with them to become their maintenance man but they give the job to a young kid that was already working for them.

They got just what they hired, inexperience. He asked me to help him with some plumbing one day as all of the PVC joints he had glued were leaking. I learned he had glued the pipe together with cleaner and didn't know about glue being used as well. Also saved his butt on an electrical problem. I left before they could take his job away from him and then offer it to me. Good kid, just didn't have the knowledge to do much of anything.
