Cost Of Repairs

Okay,

Rained 4" last night so I decided to fix that goofy 686 so it would start on it's own.

I got parts amounting to one alternator, one battery, and a 14" braded ground strap. They told me they would send me a bill fer $201.83.

Now, I can scratch around and come up with the 83 cents I think, but can anyone loan me the $201? :>(

Repairs tend to cost $20, $200, $2000 or $20,000. That is just the way it is.

Gee, thats not bad. I just spend $200 for the batteries in 656 diesel. Throw in $88 for the battery cables, and $74 for the hydualic hose...

A good battery is around $80 these days, $100 for the alternator, and only a few bucks for the ground strap and taxes - I think you got away just fine.

Ha ha, repair bills around here have run in the thousands of dollars in the last few days... well, that is, if we were to fix everything.

Grain vac died - new blower = $4500 (not fixing this one!)
Truck brakes quit working on the tag axle, power steering pulley broke, parking brake worn out - haven't got the bill for that yet.
Hydraulic hose leaking on 2590 = $45
New pressure tank for the farm well - around $1200 plus labor to install it!
540 rpm PTO shaft for 4450 JD - $175
Doing this as a vacation from teaching - priceless.

I got to spend $230 today on a new rim and inner tube. Got a good deal on the rim, though.

Oh yeah, forgot tires - around $400 worth in repairing/replacing four tires already!

Al, I don't know if this will make you feel better, but just for a comparison, last week I put a $1000 dollar 160amp alternator on a combine. Count the zeroes.

Bosch is pretty proud of their stuff and I don't think another alternator can be substituted cause the combine computer has to sense the impulses from the proper alternator.Jim

567 JD baler $2.92 one bolt one washer. 10 hours of my labor to replace it.

I think you stole that stuff. Silly little alternator for a Mitsubishi engine on a bulldozer- $350- only saving grace was that it so little it was easy to hold in place (while standing on your head) putting it in.

Yea, they came from the factory with 2 6v batteries but one of those 1000 cca 12v batteries works better.

1/2 the connections = 1/2 the trouble
