Convert a mower from 3pt to trailer

Has anyone ever done this?

I'm trying to find a 5 or 6 ft mower for a tractor that doesn't have a 3pt hitch. I'm on a pretty tight budget and haven't seen any tow type mowers in my price range. 3pt versions are more cheaper and more plentiful. I have wheels, bearings, and steel to make the trailing assembly. I am pretty sure I can come up with parts for the hitch, but I am concerned about the PTO shaft length.

Any thoughts?

If you can find a old pull-type corn picker or silage chopper they will have a long drive shaft. Maybe you could find one of them and shorten it to your needs.

This is a 5ft finish mower hooked up to a Farmall A

I wasn't happy with my Wood's RM-59 with the wheels on the back and skids on the front for the way the skids would cut into the ground especially when wet. You could set it so the skids barely touched the ground, but if the gound was not even it would end up gouging. So even with the 3 point hitch set up, I put a front set of dolly wheels (swiped off another RM-59 I bought for parts). Now with the 3 point I have it set so the mower runs on the wheels and is guided and lifted by the 3 point. I don't see any reason why this couldn't be used as a trailing mower with the addition of a tongue and a longer power shaft.

I did this with a Howse 5' hog about 12 years ago. I diden't have a tractor with 3 pt and only had a JD AR to pull it. I welded 2 pieces of 1.5" X 1/4" angle into a square and connected it to the existing slide tube. I also used a rear axle from a Dodge Omni for the trailing wheels.
I took a guess from other trailers I'd seen, and made the slide shaft stop just behind the hitch. By the time I hooked it up to the PTO, there was a foot of sliding area for the shaft.

PTO shaft placement on older tractors varies in height and distance from drawbar

I have to repair my brush hog since climbing out of a low ditch, the hog bit into the ground and the AR (unphased by this, and thumping away)ripped 1/2 the teeth off the pinion gear, so good luck!

I have been thinking about doing this with a 5' finish mower to tow behind my Oliver 60 Standard. I have a 3-Point version I use with a John Deere 435. With a 4-Wheel type finish mower it shouldn't be a problem to make a tongue to hook to the drawbar and get a longer shaft. I think the rear wheels would have to be made solid, where they would not turn. If not I would think the mower would wander back and forth since all four wheels would rotate?

I'd consider doing something similar but using a hydraulic motor if I knew what size motor would work. I assume something that will turn 540 rpm at 1600 psi. Or are these bushhogs made for 1000 rpm?

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll keep my eyes open and wait for a good deal, then make it fit the tractor.
