Some questions about brush hog.

My tractor is a 50hp Kubota and I know it is over kill for a five foot brush hog. Will that much tractor tear up the brush hog? Is $275.00 a fair price for a brush hog used only two times behind a Yuppie sized John Deere? The yuppie lost his job and is now selling his toys.

Sounds like a good price even if it's a lightly built cheap one. I wouldn't worry about the 50 hp, just don't try to cut stuff that's too big.

will 5' cover your tire width of your tractor?
probably does mater, but you would have to backup along stuff to get close w/hog..if its a jd bushhog, they use to be built very well

keep in mind that the 50hp is what the tractor CAN produce. If the brush hog is only rated at, say, 30hp, then simply don't give it any more load than would require 30 hp. by using a smaller tractor that can't overload the mower you remove the operator from the equation.

I have a L2800 29 HP with a 5' Bush Hog that has the 40 HP gearbox. I sheared one pin last year so now I know what not to cut. Just remember what you have behind that 50 HP tractor. David...................

orgot to mention that you got a really good buy in the cutter. David..............

I doubt you ever put more than 25 pto HP to that five foot 'hog unless you start cutting small trees.
Just because your tractor can put out 50 HP doesn't mean that you will be able to put that to the cutter just cutting grass. My rule of thumb for sizing a cutter is about 5 pto HP per foot of cutter and that's a conservative number for people cutting grass.

Very good price. I pulled a 5 footer behind an IH 460 that was close to 7' wide. The mower came with the tractor. Never made sense to me expecially in mowing those 5' tall weeds such as giant ragweed. Whatever the overlap/distance between the inside of your tractor tire and the edge of the cut will basically get run over twice by the tire before it gets cut. Seems like my mower stuck out about 6" into the tire width. Then on each successive pass I would keep the inside of the wheel just into the cut area giving me about 4 1/2' of cut per pass which is probably typical overlap anyway.
