OT Welding stainless steel???

The sparger tube on my old sprayer was leaking around the plastic fitting in the tank, so I took it out to replace the fitting. The threads in the end of the sparger tube are rotted away, and I need to weld on a new pipe fitting. Can I weld fitting to tube with a plain AC welder, or does it take something fancier than I have to weld it? Do you need a special rod to weld it? Chris

Welding stainless steel and any other metal with an alloy protective coating is a bad idea. Certain alloys used, particularly the zinc coating in galvanized steel, create carcinogenic and poisonous gas when burned. Exposure to the stuff can result in heavy metal poisoning (welding shivers) - flu like symptoms that can persist for a few days, but that can also cause permanent damage.

You can weld stainless steel with carbon steel rods or wire. It will weld just fine but the weld will rust not useing stainless rods or wire.

I don't think you care if the weld rusts a little. I wouldn't care.

You would be best to weld it with a TIG welder. If it is a nipple that you need to weld on you, can get them in stainless steel. Which would make it easier to weld with a stick welder than the standard pipe fitting. Be carfull of the fumes they can get you. I know because I have a fifty percent disability because of them.

YES YES YES.......you will be poisoning yourself and the ENVIRONMENT!!!!!!

The ENVIRONMENT GOD (aka the abundant Left Greenies as represented by the Democratic Party) would be offended and will strike you dead!

Good lord, every time anybody asks about a chemical, fuel, etc., some person jumps up to proclaim the poison effect produced by either opening the cap, spilling a drop or heaven forbid...burning it.

I am far more afraid of the Leftists and the Greenie nuts than any carcenigens.

Typically you use a E309 rod when welding stainless to carbon steel. Could you get a stainless fitting too? That way you won't have the problem on down the road.

You could go with all plastic, stainless or brass fittings or braze it. Get the right stainless arc rod and can weld it just fine with yes even a AC arc welder I do it all the time. Just use a stainless wire brush to help clean the weld area well.

Picture looks to me like it has been Silver Soldered, but it can be welded, and don't worry too much about this little job killing you, I've probably burnt a ton of stainless rod in my life and I ain't dead yet,HA! Welding man.

TIG would be the best because it would be easier to weld on the thinner tubing. It could be accomplished with weld rod but you would have to be careful to flow the weld from the thicker fitting to the thinner tubing. Stainless steel welding with stainless steel rod will not poison you. Galvanized with its Zinc coating will put off some bad gas, but a fan will keep it away from you. You job looks like stainless to mild steel, no galvanized involved. You should be fine.

Silver Solder? I have heard the term, but not sure how it is done. Is this something like brazing? What rod do you use? Chris

Silver soldering is a form of brazing, but at a lower temperature.Silver solder can bought in wire form or in a stick. You use a white paste flux with it.It is fairly expensive depending on what percentage of pure silver it has in it, but works very well on copper, stainless steel or steel. It is used a lot to attach O ring blocks on high pressure hydraulic lines etc.Jewelers also use it to repair jewelry.

Welding SS creates Chromium +6 fumes. Long term Cr+6 causes lung cancer. Wear specific respiratory protection, use good ventilation, or supplied air mask.

Yes we have all been exposed to something or another in our lifetime. As we become better informed it only makes good sense to limit, reduce or eliminate the exposure.
