I have one of the cheap version, JD mowers from Home Depot. An L120 I think. Anyway, it appears the motor has locked up. It is a twin cyl. I have taken the belts off and cannot get it to turn over. Any tips on discovering the degree of failure will be appreciated.

Thanks, Gene

There is a bunch of great people on the "garden tractor" place down below. Many there repair such things for a living. Bet they can help if no one here can.

I GUESS IT IS NOT UNDER WARRENTY I ALSO BOUGHT ONE THE G100 AFTER A YEAR AND 2 MTHS IT STARTED BURNING OIL AT A HIGH RATE I QT TO ABOUT 5 GAL OF GAS TOOK IT TO A JD REP THE LOOKED AT IT SAID THE ENGINE WAS SHOOT SOMTHING ABOUT THE BLOCK BEING BAD JD SAID THEY WOULD SPLIT THE COST OF 3500 FOR NEW ENGINE WICH IS 1750 MY COST I WAS NOT HAPPY AS I COULD HAVE BOUGHT A NEW ENGINE MYSELF FOR LESS THAN HALF TOLD THEM TO PUT IT BACK TOGETHER AND I PICKED IT UP STILL RUNS AND STILL BURNS OIL SO DON'T EXSPECT MUCH HELP FROM JD ON THIS IF IT IS CLOSE TO BEING IN WARRENTY WOULD TAKE IT IN AND SEE WHAT THEY WOULD DO I WOULD NOT BUY ANOTHER JD FROM HD AS THEY ARE THE CHEAPER MODEL BUT THE BETTER ONES HAVE THE SAME ENGINE

I have one of the JD Sabre mowers made about 8 years ago. It has a Briggs engine on it and it used oil from day one. It got really bad last year and would smoke heavily if you had it on a slant when mowing a ditch. I like the mower, it is hydro, easy to run and comfortable, has a beer holder built into it. So I had my shade tree mechanic look at it this winter. Turns out it had blown the head gasket because of a "dimple" defect on top of the block. He had a machinist friend build that spot back up, $30.00 for a gasket set and we are back in business. It is no longer using oil or smoling. Pull the engine apart - you may be able to save it, or if you cannot, you might pick up a replacement engine for less than $500.00

Thanks, I'll check with the garden tractor folks also.

This thing never used oil, although it was a little cantankerous starting.

My son is an Ag National accounts mgr. for JD in KC. He can get us a better version at a little over cost, plus as an employee he can get a $350 rebate. Still gonna ruin $2000. I am all for hiring the grass cut!!!

redpocadot - there's a good chance your dealer misdiagnosed your problem. The Kohler's like to blow head gaskets. Pretty simple fix.

Gene, if you locked it up, for the most part it's "junk". The only bearing in there is the upper bearing on the crank. Everything else is just aluminum on steel. Might try to find a L series with a bad trans or bad deck at a dealer or on craigslist, or try "smallenginewarehouse" for a reman engine.

Good luck.
