Fire Extinguisher

They are long overdue, where and what kind of fire extinguishers, should I buy to carry in my vehicles and on gas fueled tractors? Thanks in advance for comments.

Shop around your local extinguisher companies for best price. I would go with 5lb ABC mounted horizontal. Preferably where you can reach them from the ground.

A is for ashes = paper wood etc

B is for barrels = gas grease etc

C is for current ==electrical

Get a 20 pound or don't bother with a bigger fire

Never buy one with a plastic head as in our area they will not refill them.

Every now and then tip them upside down and tap with a rubber mallet as the powder is very fine and settles into the bottom.

To use them properly is probably one of the most important things to remember because they will put out twice as much fire if used correctly.

Then if the tractor is gas and outside of the shed, what are you willing to risk your life for? Often it is best to get away, and NEVER STAND WHERE YOU CAN get run over if the tractor should start up in gear.

Get an ABC type. (basically all purpose)

Dont get the super cheap $10 ones, there are several that are little bigger then a 2liter bottle and cost about $25, best $25 you hope you never need.

ABC type. Any size is better than nothing, but bigger would be better. When we drove across the Mackinaw Bridge last fall every 10th tractor had to have a fire extinguisher on board. As I looked I think most of us had one. Thankfully not one was needed.

Class A pressurized water 2-1/2 gallon with AFFF added. Plus antifreeze if located in freezing locations.
A dry chem ABC is nearly useless on a deep seated class A fire or when heat has to be removed to prevent re-ignition.
We all see $200-300 thousand dollar machines with a 5lb ABC dry chem extinguisher, what a laugh. Water with a wetting agent is what knocks down a baler, combine or engine compartment fire.

True as far as it goes.

I'd supplement that with a dry chemical ABC in case
of fuel fires. Water on burning diesel just
spreads things around.

You make a valid point, but most equipment does not have the room for such an extinguisher. Also dry chem is much more forgiving of less than perfect use.

I was a pro firefighter for 10years.
I said water with AFFF, not plain water.
I'll take on anything but a high voltage electrical fire with a 2-1/2 pressurized water vs. you and a 20lb dry chem.

Probably goes without saying, but I assume you have em on your diesels too, good reminder to all, need to get one for my ole LP ford, alternator went up in smoke this week, never know when you'll need one when you think about it.

You just validated my point. 2.5 gal AFFF in a professionals hands can fight a lot of fire. He's not an expert he'ld do alot better with the dry chem.
