Round bale mover

Been putting up squares for this lady and its lots of work for me and her. She has no way to move large bales so I have been looking for a ATV mover (she has one). Found several, all similar to one made by
http://www.stickwagon.com/
Just wondering if any of you came up with a cheap mover?? Or know how well these work. Thanks, Bob

How much moving are you talking about? Does she have a tractor? I've got a 3pt hitch spike that I use, but before that, just used a homemade platform on the back. Just back up to it, tip the bail over on it, and raise it up. Looped a rope around it for any distance. That ATV thing looks like it would take up a bunch of room.

She keeps between 17 and 20 horses between three pastures, all Arabian. No tractor, not even a truck. Her husband walked out once and was watching us unload hay and she sent him inside. Guess he has a bad back.

mnbob the only thing i can think of cheap is a low flatbed trailer to flop the bale onto and pull it to the pasture, but this lady is going to have to be got to understand if she is going to keep 17 horses, she is going to have to invest in at least one used tractor with loader and bale spear, im only feeding 6 and 1/2 horses and i have 2 tractors it dont take much money to pick up a old unit that will still have some life left in it

Bob,

All she needs is a good harness. :>)

I'm guessing because I don't know the tractor economy there, but for the price and sweat of buying/building something for the ATV that she could pick up something 8n size with 3ph and make/buy a spike. Even the platform I have would be ideal if she could handle tipping a roll onto it. Just 2 4x4's laid over the drawbar and the ends wedged under the tractor in a V shape with cleats nailed on the bottom to keep from sliding back and forth, then a half sheet of plywood nailed on. Can move mountains with that. We've got 12 scattered around and I sometimes use a trailer behind my ATV and just load it up with loose hay from the roll.

Good luck,

Dave

Atv is not heavy enough to move round bail. Sit and spin. BTDT. A bale buggy only works if you have traction. 4WD is sometimes needed. I"ve tried and wasted money on all these options. A tractor with 3 PT bail spear or loader is about the only logical choice.

looks like that one puts enough weight on your atv to work but if pulling any distance with it I would think it would be hard on the trans of the atv. I have two bale movers a homemade one and a factory one and I like them. if you have a tractor with no 3 point...as most mine are, they are great or to move a bale from place to place with truck. I do prefer the type that have "forks" that cradle the bale at the bottom on each side rather than the "spear" type you show on your website because if you have a old or sloppy bale, the spear will leave it all over the place where the forks will cradle and carry it better.

If she--can afford that many horses and their upkeep then she can afford a used tractor to move bales with.

I agree with others that moving heavy round bales with an ATV is simply not safe, well maybe on perfectly smooth surface it might be okay.

If she is going to be in the business of raising/keeping horses then she needs the equipment to do so.

A dray or sled should work pretty good with an ATV -- at least the load would not be able to turn over the ATV in rough ground or slopes. Probably have to binder strap the roll down.

[By golly Allan, Hadn't seen that picture for a while, I think its the same one my Mom showed me of Dad, that would be him third back with the light load and mules. LOL

Question for you old guys that know something about farming with horses. Why doe that lead team have three horses on it?

Gordo

Gordo the lead team had three horses because that is what the owner/driver figured he needed for the load. Heavier horses worked regular pulled a load that three lighter ones coulnt. Dad used 2 most of the time on the farm but I remember 6 up on a heavy double wagon hauling alfalfa. Then a team of lighter horses pulled the hay up into the mow.

The white face is being trained.

After an experienced team drags the newbe around for a day or two, it will be ready to work.
