Scare crows for deer problems?

Anyone have experience using scare crows to ward away deers? I have 45 acre field of soybeans the deer (about 10) have nibbled down bad. When my seed salesman told me to put up a scarecrow I just laughed. I got a permit to kill 5 female deers & the DNR guy sent me instructions for a cheap scarecrow. I made two and they do seem to have an effect. The DNR said the scarecrows need to be moved every few days. I have taken one deer down. Last night I saw only two deer and they went running when they saw my truck. Since I am about an hour away from this field I am trying the scarecrows. It seems funny but they might be working. Of course knocking off one of their buddies probably helped.

I've used scarecrows and they will keep the deer away if you will go and get some cheap after shave or perfume and spray on them, also ask your wife to bring home hair clippings from the beauty salon and put in the shirt or pants pockets of the scarecrow, you can also get hair from your barber, deer don't care for human scent. You will have to add scent to the scarecrow from time to time.

I'd use the first 4 permits, then quit count'n. Keep the last one on you if any one shows up.

The rats with antlers reply is pretty much true.

I currently use the model 30-06 scare crow. In the past I"ve used 12ga and chevy 1500 V-8 scare crows with equal success. Seriously, with time, deer will get used to anything that is motionless-even you! Dave

I used a scarecrow to keep deer out of my food plots last year. The only problem I had was wondering who was in my fields every time I crested a rise. Took me a couple seconds to realize it was my scarecrow. Seemed to work on the deer though.

They told me to get a big dog. Now my Boarder collie makes sure that the deer are all herded up in one neat pack slowly moving about the farm.

We got a big dog. 88 lb, Shepherd/chow mix. He used to bark at deer, but now he just stands around and watches 'em. Unless he's asleep. Then the deer feel free to jump the fence and eat the tasty garden plants. Dog don't mind, he don't much like those plants himself. Deer wouldn't stand a chance if they tried to make off with his disgusting dead rabbits and moles, though.

It seems to work, just don't sit them in a chair. I had the top half of a halloween scarecrow I set on an old chair and every day for three weeks the chair was knocked over. I think it was a buck trying to buck it or hump it :)

Good luck,
Bill
