im going to get a tractor for my house,i have a ford 8n right now,im looking for live pto, hydraulics and maybe a fel.i garden about 1/2 acre in the summer, push snow in the winter, and i heat with wood so i would like to maybe have front end loader to move my wood from where i cut to where i stack it for the winter.what tractor would you recommend?thank you

what tractor to recomend depends on how much money you want to spend most tractors built after the mid '60's have live hydraulics and pto, you can get something like a thousand series ford for 5 or 6 grand and go up from there i have a john deere 301a its rated around 45 hp, and has a front loader live hydraulics rear and mid mount live pto, i gave twice that for it but its a very low hour tractor, or you can go buy one of the new "yuppie tractors" for 30 grand or so some even have cup holders, lol

I do similar work, though there is 98 acres or so here, a utility sized tractor like the hundred series or thousand series fords, with a loader, will work well. I know one thing, there will always be one of some sort in my yard, I like the older fords, but most from that era and up, utility and or industrial models in that size equipped as you need it will do the job, to me that size tractor very useful. Power steering would be a plus with a loader. Bucket forks for wood is also very handy, I can handle all I need with a set of those, 6'-8' lengths onto my F-600 and before you know it I'm set for a winters worth, + good exercise too !

I'm partial to anything AC,so that said I would look for a D15 w/Loader and back blade or if a larger size tractor is wanted keep an eye out for a series 4 D 17 AC w/loader and back blade.

For pushing snow and winter use with a loader 4WD would be ideal, but that would require a newer style tractor and I assume you don't want spend that kind of money. Otherwise any utility tractor, but I would avoid models that were indeed great tractors such as the Oliver 550 and MM 445, but finding repair parts is significantly more difficult. I've got several 2-cyls including a model 430 and love them, but wouldn't recommend them for the casual user. Also would avoid the known turkeys such as the JD 2010. AC had good tractors, but again parts can be more difficult to find. Personally I would either go with a Ford or newer JD product because in most cases many were built and parts are generally available. If you don't mind searching for parts or just particularily like a certain model or make of tractor, the field is wide open, but I'd still opt for a utility model.

Hauling firewood with the small bucket on a compact utility tractor would be the pits so you have virtually eliminated the compacts from your list.

For vegetable growing they would probably fit your operation best, if you intend to ever use a 3 pt. roto-tiller. Slow speed and narrow width to till out tire tracks work best. If your soil is heavy it will take some h.p. for the tiller.

For a ½ acre garden a tractor is almost overkill as you would only need it for a few operations and the larger tractors aren't turned around as readily as smaller ones.

Perhaps snow removal and moving firewood should be your biggest focus.

I have 1956 Cockshutt 35 with live PTO it was invented by them but never patented. BUMMER did they loose money on that one. Figure to spend around $6000 for anything that is worth owning and can do the jobs that you want. Make and model really are not important get what you like that fits your pocket book and your job.
