3rd reverse?

We have a 1964 3020JD synchro with probably over 20,000 hrs. The shifting is very loose (we have a new spacer kit purchased but not installed). Tonight when i was cutting brush with the rear mount cutter i was sliding between forward and reverse i noticed that the reverse i selected was quite a bit faster than i had known in the past. After realizing that i was in the 4th and 7th gear range i realized that i had found a 3rd reverse, my dad had said that 3010's had a 3rd reverse but this baffled me as i have been operating this tractor since i was 4yrs old and have never been here before, does anyone experienced this before?

yes they do have a third reverse im told jd didnt label it that way because they didnt want anyone to use it as its really fast the very early ones or very late ones had it marked but i cant remeber now

Early 3010, 4010 & 5010 had 3rd reverse. Later ones had it blocked out or removed. All it was good for is accidents and burning out the clutch !

It was marked, at least on some of 'em. Worked great with a cotton picker; gave you a semi-road gear. Put lots of hours on a 3010 ('63 thur '69) with a '122' picker.

There is a 3rd reverse and a fourth reverse in the transmission. Third reverse was enabled in the 3010 and 4010, but not in the 3020 and 4020 because it was too fast for safety and the gears weren't strong enough to not break occasionally. Fourth reverse would be even worse about breaking stuff (in the transmission and near the tractor). The lock out is up in the dash shifter assembly. A bit of filing on a shifter that isn't worn has been known to add 3rd reverse to a 3020 or 4020.

Yeah, my 4010 has the bonus gear too, but it is unlabeled. My theory is that it was not labeled because Deere realized early on that it was a lawsuit waiting to happen. As long as it was not labeled, then Deere had plausible deniability because you were not operating it as intended.

Really though I don"t know if it is really that much faster than my 2950 in 4R-High (which seems way too fast for reverse too).
