Diesel engine life

I"m looking to buy a used backhoe and wanted to find out what kind of life was left on average maintained engine with 3-4000 hours on it?

All depends on how they were used and taken care of. I saw an Onan DJC with 12000 hours on it before the crank broke. Saw a Detroit that never got past 2000 hours due to lack of care.Do they have all records for it. What brand is it.

I agree with Billy Shafer. My neighbor has a Ford 5600 with well over 12,000 hours on it with no overhaul(s). But, they've owned it since new and have been careful and lucky. My answer to you was pretty much the way I view a used tractor that I don't know the history of.

I would qualify this by asking what make/model hoe it is... but I would generally expect 10000+ hours from a hoe's engine if it was looked after in a basic way.
The engines in those things don't work terribly hard relative to what they would in a tractor unless the machine spent it's life loading rock or something like that...

There is one big problem with backhoe engines and that is you are watching the hoe looking backwards NOT looking at the gauges. If something goes wrong like blowing a hose or looseing oil preasure you don't see it.

If the obvius things on the hoe have been taken care of like the pins and bushings lubed and general apperrance of machine is good the they probably took good care the engine too. A well cared for diesel not worked hard should last 10,000 hrs.
