i thought it was funny today at work i teddered hay with a JD 4020 that runs at 100 hp. i wanted to know how much overkill you guys have had.

We've raked with a John Deere 4620 so we didn't have to bring another tractor to a field kinda far from home. A friend raked with a John Deere 4430 on a roll a bar rake a few years ago, when everything else was too far away or broke down.

Was out of gas here at home once and raked with a 145hp 1086. Hay was dry and didn't want to wait on gas.

I also put my 1086 on the 15' batwing when it is hot out. Got to love that A/C.

But that 1086 burns less per hour on those light loads than the 560 gas does pulling the same load.

I am not a farmer, just work for some that seem to have money to burn. I do as I'm told.
I've used an IH 1206 with a 4-14 plow.
4440 JD on hay rake and small square baler.
Watched a Versatile 950 and a Steiger PT320 hooked together to pull a 10 bottom plow. Normally they EACH pulled a 10 bottom.

I have used my 8 wheel rake with the 4755 after the 2520 went down. All of the other tractors were 30 miles away. But man the air conditioning was nice that afternoon!!!

I raked hay a few time with a 1468 international, thought it was a little overkill myself, but that is what the boss said to use, then i found out it is pretty easy on fuel unless all 8 cylinders are runnin. Bob

I use a 90 hp Oliver for everything related to hay ( IH 990 moco, Oliver 207 5 bar side delivery rake and a old 14t baler ) since that's the only wide front tractor I have. ...Randy

about the closest to overkill i can get is when i buryed the bosses old dog when it died of old age, at the pit, i used a caterpillar 235 excavator to dig the hole, to give a idea of how big a 235 is, it weighs right at 100,000lbs the dog was a beagle

We've used our 1855 (105 HP on the pto) to pull our 24' spike tooth drag as it was the only one w/ duals on. We've raked hay with it once or twice too- Didn't wanna start another tractor or unhook the 285 from the baler. Used it to pull our 3-16 plow before I bought our 4-16 plow too.

John Deere 8300 PTO powering a bale elevator to put up several thousand bales of straw. (When there's electricity available the bale elevator runs on a 2-1/2 HP motor...)

My first year out of college I raised an acre of 'baccer on a neighbor. He had the 5000 in the chicken houses hooked to the cruster and I needed to plow my 'baccer. Used his 8600, would of liked the TW-30's a/c but didn't want to take the duels off.

I have another neighbor who takes care of his dad's place and cows. His dad's tractors all got retired years ago for the most part. He puts up about 50 acres of hay with an 8200 and 8410. Both look funny hooked to a 9' moco or a V rake.

how about grinding feed in a new holland grinder mixer with an IH 1468? would that count as overkill? I also pulled the boss's 4 wheeler out of a mudhole with a Massey 1155 v8(it's the only one that would start). Ummm. Pulled a cart for a big garden tractor with a ford 7700 cuz the 4 wheeler broke. I think some of those might qualify as overkill!

I've done that when I was a kid and helping a close family friend bale hay. He did not have all of his tractors in the hay field and we were a couple of miles from the house. Hooked-up the Chevy 4x4 and pulled the hay rake with it.

Seven foot sickle mower on a 1086. Couldn't see the bar because of the fender, but like Gary said,"got to love that A.C." Jim

Eastern Washington and Oregon alfalfa guys usually use pickup trucks to pull the rake- cold air, tunes, cooler, good lights at night- priceless.

How about the opposite? I pulled two wagons with my 210 John Deere Lawn tractor. One had some hay in it, the other was empty. Pulling on flat ground, out onto the road, down the road, to a local field. Got tired of waiting for my cousin to show up with his dodge.

Had to use the J.D. 4520 w/ duals to hoe 40 acres of solid seeded beans w/ a J.D. 18 " hoe. Every other tractor was busy.Found out latter, the duals were a plus.

Right after eight weeks of prostate cancer treatment, I raked (8 ft rake) with the 826. Mowed, baled, and tedded with it cause it had the best ride of any of the 9 on the place. Didn't take long to park the 3010 that summer!

Worked for a guy, well helped actually cause he didn't pay me. Used 8960 on 14' culipacker, 7800 for raking with kuhn wirly rake, 9100 pulling 300bu manure spreader, and I can go on. He is one of these guys that wants to have biggest equipment, what an idiot, but then again it might be me because he stiffed me for over 1000 in pay.

I was using a JD 5020 with duals to pull a 10ft disc last week. I have seen the same tractor rake hay. I drove past a White 4-150 with a New idea cut/ditioner hooked to it today.

Anyone have a better thought onthe chain tensioner
for the cut conditioner. the present one is cast iron. The
chain groves the castiron and wears the chain . Thanks
Mike
