My Next Project... Not orange

but... for the first time ever.... green :)

I dragged this home tonight. I bought it from a local farmer i work for.. We were talking about scrap metal and he mentioned these old deere implements he was going to take in. So i bought them on the spot, thinking if he was going to scrap them, i might get some parts to sell and get my money back, and have some weldable steel around once i figure out how to do that.....

He showed me this and a planter and i knew i had my next project. This cultivators perfact, accept for one wheel, and a bent bar.

I drove the tractor out to his place this morning, worked all day and brought this home with me. Ive never had anything wider then the yellow line.... Dodging cars and mailboxes was interesting, but, i made it home in one peice.

Any idea what model it is??? Or how old it is?? Id guess new generation series but im by no means a deere expert.

I also got a 490 planter. With great fertiliser boxes and the rest of it is in OK shape. Restorable, but not a flawless barn kept orignal. Still has orignal paint in good shape. Im thinking of parting that one out and getting back my money for both deere implements, and the old grain drill he threw in.

Anyone interested in some 490 parts???

Heres the Cultivator:

On the cultivator RM on the bar is the model and it has a model tag on the left end of the bar and yes New Generation. Now that cultivator to sell it is worthless, most have been sent to scrap because no body cultivates any more. Now the piece you are thinking about parting out The planter if it is a 490 is worth more than the later model 494 & 494A planters is the one item with value of possibly a few hundred dollars, please do not scrap it. Can you post good pictures of the planter?

i wont scrap either....

I think i'll restore the cultivator. I dont know what i'll do with a 4 row cultivator..... but it will be a cool project.

The planter is stuck for now... The farmer stole the cylender off it but promised to find it....

The tires are in great shape, so the next time i go work for the guy, i'll drag that one home.

Id get pictures, but next time i see it, i'll be hitching it up......

Im uploading a video on this cultivator....

I have one very similar to that, a little bigger, out in the fence row. And a IH very similar, too.

A 490 planter should not have a cylinder, just a rope to pull to raise and lower it. They did make a cylinder attachment for a 490 but 99.99% were the rope (Clutch) lift.

If you are interested , I have 2 vintage original operator manuals for that 490 planter. One still has the original brown wrapper with it , printed 11/52 , and the other 9/51 both in excellent shape. Show complete instructions on check-wire planting etc. 80 pages of parts , photos and instructions. My e-mail is open.

Good work Lanse, some day you will have as much junk that I have. Did you get any of those engines runing? Richard

nope... not yet...

The stuck one is soaking....

The loose one i havent touched...

The MTD doesnt seem to want to run... Its not getting spark.... I've tried all the mags around here except for the one on my wheelhorse... but it looks like i need a mag. Or two. Both the ones on those other engines are shot... Well they might be just fine... but the non-replaceable (atleast to my knowlage) plug wires are toast....

We're getting there!!

I've got a single row cultivator made from one of these. The guy took two close, two near and two far springs and their mounts and mounted them on a three point frame. It works like a charm on a single row! He's known for taking old multi row implements and configuring them for single row use. You could built about three single row cuntilavators from that one. I paid $250 for mine so you may be looking a about $750 worth of equipment if you build single row style to sell.
