It's A Gamble

Okay,

So I rolled the dice and ordered a new sickle for the old swather this morning.

Been raining off and on for the past two weeks and I "think/hope/assume" there might be a hay crop out there this year.

Sure hope it materializes. :>(

Good year here for the crop...bads year for getting it baled. I'm still waiting for 4 dry days in a row!!
I'm wondering how horses would do on silage? :)

Oh yeah, I forgot that part.

Guess I'd better go out there in the weeds and see if I can find a baler too. :>)

Well, Allan, it must be a good year for you if you've gotten so much moisture the weeds are tall enough to hide the baler!

Happy baling!!

P.S. We're cutting our hayfield this weekend. Will post pics & video next week.

Son got all of his Alfalfa baled and in the barn with little damage. Secon cutting will be ready next week. He goes by Degree-Day Heat and it is over 700 this morning. Got a Mesonet weather station five miles away to get the info from.Had a heavy rain. OSU at Stillwater had a lot of damage. With windows broken. Did not have any here at farm.

Allen - how well does one of those swathers work? I've always cut hay with a towed MoCo, but thought one of those self contained units would be just the ticket for my small odd shaped feilds. And it's the right color of course. Do the conditioners on them work good?

Oh yeah,

Just like your MoCo, but without the fight. Just like running a combine. Cuts at 9mph and sure gobbles the acres.

Is that a model 5000? we bought one at work but haven't picked it up yet, yours looks to be in real good shape. How do you like it? And 9 mph, I didnt think a sickle machine could cut that fast i dont know if i am ready for something over 5.5 mph lol. Is that speed only in alfalfa or grass too? How big is your header?

Mowed yard last night and probably should rake and bale it!:^) Cousin called and said no need to come to farm today, another 1.5" of rain and too wet to side dress corn. Watching weather report in Indiana right now (Sat 7:10 AM) and calling for more scattered showers here tonight, but long-term forecast has heat (89 degrees) by Thur. Farmers are like the mailman - rain, snow, flood, mud, hell or high water gotta get through somehow. We don't get as many blizzards as you do - that western dry farming you guys do out there looks a lot more difficult than the corn and soybeans we grow here. Best of luck!
