Diesel knock or ping

The motor on my MF 231 has the same 3 cyl diesel perkins engine as a lot of other models. When it idles I can hear some noise which sounds like in the upper head area. It is a noise I have been hearing lately that I hear on other diesel's sometimes. What could be causing this. Is this a bad thing? On a good pull there is hardly any smoke. Stan

If it's got an injection pump with lines leading to each injector nozzle that may be the noise you hear.

I don't know if you ever heard an injection pump being tested on a test bench but it sounds just like a diesel sitting there running at an idle. There is a lot of pressure in those lines and it makes a noise when the nozzles pop open.
