Need some expertise from you folks out there.....
5000 Ford Tractor with Diesel Engine...reworked (machine shop) block, head, timed (I hope), adjusted valves and so on....Anyway, she started right up and ran for about 20-30 minutes....then, black smoke and died....took back to shop removed valve cover and 3 of the 4 push rods were broken to the intake valves....what happen in your opinions.....I would appreciate any suggestions....Thanks

alignment of rocker arms? push rods too tight, not set in the dimple correct before tightened?...

they broke either because of sideways pressure or too tight on vertical pressure.. you need to figure out which one is the cause. are they out of alignment and being slammed against the holes in the head?.. did you set the valve clearance correctly or set them like they were hydraulic lifters instead of solid lifters? were each rod set into the dimple on the lifter and the dimple on the rocker arm?

best quess is wrongly aligned rocker arm shaft or too tight and or too loose so they jumped around and then jumped out of place and got caught..

guess I'm repeating myself.. good luck..

Thanks for the reply....will check out tomorrow and see what I come up with....will post my findings......

Need a lot more details about what you had done to the tractor? Complete rebuild, sleeves, pistons, professional machine shop? Sounds like someone tightened the rocker arms down so tight that the valves hit the pistions.Did you have the head reworked by machine shop? Who set the valves? Tom
