Wiring and Squirels

May be off topic, but does anyone have an answer on how to keep squirels from chewing the wiring on my Ford F-150??????? Just had it fixed (again) this afternoon. Darn squirels get under hood and go to work. 3 or 4 times this past year. I end up getting the creature, but he gets me first. Chews the wires off right close to the connecting plug, so splicing is not an option. I know the ins co is getting tired of my claims, and I am getting tired of the squirels. The truck sits outside. No food in area nor anything else to attract them. Any ideas?????????? Thanks. jim in ILL.

I have had a similar problem with those pesky vermin. I wait until the engine is cool and I place a bowl of amonnia under the hood. Now more squirels. Kind of a pain to have to keep doing but it is primarily in the fall when I have to do it. I have also read that squirles are driven off by stobe lights but I haven"t had time to wire one up under the hood yet. Was thinking about wiring it up and using an external extension cord so not to run battery down..will let you know if it works when I get around to it.

Pet dander under the hood ( not on hot surfaces).Just toss old socks in dog or cat's bed for a while, maybe add some feces and tie under hood. This assumes the varmints frequintly encounter dogs and cats.

Had one chew through a 26 kv. feeder line at work.Fried squirel.!!!For some reason they like the rubber insulation on wiring.

i had the same problem , the little bushy tailed rats ate the wiring on 2 trucks and the air filter off 3, got me a redbone coonhound, 3 years ago when he was about 4 he took a liking to squirrels, and disposed of 26 in one summer 3 years without a chewed wire or air filter now, the hound still checks out the trucks every day the squirrels still exist in the sourounding area but not around the house must have learned this place isnt the best to take up housekeeping

In Japan years ago they had this problem with rats chewing thru their main computer wires. They found out that the wires were giving off a humming sound that sounded like the rats' mating signal so they started chewing thru the insulation to get to a mate. I wonder if this is what's happening on the vehicles with squirrels.

To help stop this the Japanese invented that sticky pad for mice and rats that you can buy. They walk on it and feet get stuck then they touch it with their nose and suffocate.

Disconnect your battery and let it set for a week or so and see what happens.

If they leave it alone then we may have found the reason they are chewing on your wiring. Seems funny to me that the wires are the only thing they go for. Fuel lines are a lot softer.

We"ve got the usual Gray and big red Fox squirrels
here, but the small red squirrels, often called
"pine Squirrels" are the real pesky tree rats.
They chewed the wiring on my Chev 1500 pickup.
Wife said it was my fault for throwing out a few
peanuts each day. I solved the problem with 22 CB
rounds, which don"t make much sound. Our Dog, a
Wrinkley Shar-Pei, catches Gray Squirrels, Rabbits
Wood Chucks, bit the little red Squirrels are too
fast.

Thanks to all who took their time to answer my query. A lot of good ideas. Had a thought on the frequency thing and think possibly, the theft alarm is giving off the signal???? We live in country (120 A) and can use 22 LR or whatever, just need to get him before he gets me. Thanks once again. jim

I stopped squirels from chewing through my
feeders at our hunting lease in texas by wrapping hardware cloth (1/4" mesh) around all square edges. I would use 1/4" or even 1/8" mesh, cut in strips (it comes in several diferent widths), and make one wrap around the wiring harnes. I would use bailing wire twists to hold firm. Quick and easy fix.
