Painting Mufflers

I'm in the process of finishing up an Oliver 77 with the muffler under the hood, and I have another 77 that I'm going to put an above hood. I tried to paint the muffler above the hood last year, and as soon as I put it on it burnt. It was supposed to be a heat resistant paint, but come to find out your supposed to bake it.
So what I am asking is how do people go about baking these? Mom won't let me put these in her oven, so I don't know how else to do it.
Anybody else been down this road? Any tips?
Also, my dad thinks we need to put some heat tape under the hood with the tractor will the muffler under the hood so that it won't burn the paint on the hood. Any ideas to prevent this? Thanks! -Dan

Yep, what Tony said.

You're using the wrong paint. Use heat paint made for an iron stove or barbeque grille. And no, ya don't have to bake it on.

Just "heat resistant" paint isn't gonna cut it.

(quoted from post at 19:38:10 06/07/09) Mom won't let me put these in her oven,

Just skin a skunk in the basement and put the hide in the freezer.. A muffler in the oven will be like ice cream in the park after that.

I paint mine with paint from NAPA (any auto parts store) that is made for manifolds, I think JD has it also. Good results. Same tractor and muffler in both pictures. Chris

you can get it at your locat JD dealer. I just got a can a month ago and it was 18 dollars. I"d try napa or maybe like the others said, some rustoleum BBQ grille paint.

I use RUSTOLEUM Brand high heat paint, from
Menards. It says on the can "for stoves, barbeques
manifolds. I put 2 coats on SANDBLASTED manifolds, and
Mufflers, from Wisconsin engines. So far no
problems. I believe it"s epoxy, and it says NO
primer. I also tried VALSPAR brand Appliance
epoxy enamel, black, and it really shines, looks
like porcelon, really dresses up an engine up,
works ok on carbs and intake manifolds, but does
not last on exhaust manifolds or mufflers.

Thanks for the pictures. I made a couple mufflers a few months ago for the 1900 class Olivers and wondered about the heat shields. One would have thought Oliver would have engineered the intake precleaner location a little better to distance it from the muffler, But...
The best paint I've found for mufflers is John Deere muffler black. It's all I use in the shop. Pricey yes, works yes.
Proper pre-painting prep important? Definently!

Use an aluminized muffler.I have one that is 22 years old with just a few rust spots.Aluminized fence wire still looks good after 30 years.
