OT ticking noise

It's the same 1997 GMC Sierra K1500 that's always having trouble. It's a 305 engine.(as far as I know). It started making a ticking noise yesterday.(not sure if ticking is the right word but I don't know whatelse to call it) Any time it's under load it will tick and will get worse with (engine)speed. It then got to the point that if you put it in reverse or any load it would make the noise and now it makes it all the time, regardless of whether it's under load, in gear, in park at idle, or in reverse. You kind of get the feeling that it could blow up at any time. My guess is that the flexplate is cracked but I'm not sure. Any ideas? Anyone know where to get a heavy duty fleplate if that is the problem? Thanks.

Sounds like flexplate is cracked, but check exhaust manifolds and y-pipe to make sure.Lower the inspection cover and take a looksy.A GM replacement flexplate would be my chioce.

I was under there looking at it and the stupid exhaust pipe is in the way of the inspection ocver. I would have to drop the cat and pipes right up to the manifolds to get it out, or can you wiggle it out of there?

I've got a 2006 Chevy with the 4.8ltr, sounds like yours must be the 5.3. Anyway, mine started doing that, sounded to me like a lifter, so again different from your problem maybe. I think mine was caused by Fram oil filters collapsing and/or disentegrading and clogging oil passages. Swithced to Wix and it stopped.

Good luck finding it.

Ticking noise ? I have to agree with Indiana Red

Chevey's will run forever if that's the case just a lifter trying to collapse I've fixed them with a good oil change, drain about 2 quarts of oil add a quart of kerosene and run at idle till it gets to running temperature, drain and change oil and filter.

The truck quit last night and will no longer start. I wasn't there when it quit but it made a bit of noise and quit. It will turn over but sounds bad and won't start. How hard is it to replace the flexplate? anybody have the procedure to do so?
