OT Spraying weeds in pumpkin patch

What can be sprayed on pumpkins to kill the grass and weeds and not harm the pumpkins?

Any thing out there not restricted so I can buy it over the counter?

Thanks,
John

there are very few herbicides labeled for pumpkins. especially for lambsquarters, and especially postemergence. However:

Command (clomazone), Curbit (ethalfluralin), Strategy (mixture of above), Sandea (halosulfuron)(for corn farmers: same as Permit), Poast (sethoxydim). Also I think I read something about a special local needs label for Dual (metolachlor) but check it out.

Command is very "hot"- if overapplied it could damage the crop. So be careful. The label says not for jack-o-lanterns cause of the danger of it bleaching them and ending up white. It can be made to work, just make sure to use a low rate and make sure the sprayer is calibrated well.

Dachtal. But you have to use it post emerge. This means letting the pumpking get three or four leaves. Apply the herbicide (comes in granuals or wetable powder to spray). Then you need to hoe or cultivate. This kills the little grass and weeds that came up after the pumpkins were planted. It also serves to incorporate the herbicide.

Dachtal is labeled for most garden crops. It is safe and work great.

Dachtal prevents the germination of seeds. That is why you need to get the pumpkins established first.

Most good Farm and home stores carry it in 5lb bags. The granuals work especially good around established flower, shrubs, trees, etc.
