i just purchased a bay city crane that says the lift capacity is 35 tons. it has 4 monster axles underneath it, 2 giant old gas motors for power and a 11,ooo # counter weight. curious if anyone would know what this monter weighs? thanks for your help, mike.

I don't have a clue about the weight, but...you've sure got to have a more understanding wife than I got.

Is that big gas engine on the crane a Minneapolis Moline? I think they supplied a lot of engines to American hoist.

Tell us more about this monster.

general rule of thumb is most cranes will weigh about 2 to 5 % more than their rated lift capacity, so if its rated at 35 tons it weighs around 72 to 75,000 lbs

i believe it does have minne moe motors in it. the carrbs are about the size of a milk jug! i bought it of a guy for junk for 500 bucks.any body needs anything off it let me know. thanx for the help, mike.

I rebuilt the 6-71 Detroit in a friends 35 ton Grove crane back in 03-04 as repayment for some tree work. We were jaw jacking one time during a break and I asked him what he thought it weighed? His reply was much like one of the above. It was somewhere in the neighborhood of 74-75,000 lbs. It was an adventure to rebuild because you had to have a six foot stepladder tied to the right side of the unit to get up and down off of the fender and access the top of the engine . Clearnce under it was no problem as they picked up the front with the outriggers. Oh and this was a tandem front steer unit.

Typically there are a number of machines that will pic the same weight. Typically the main variables between two different cranes that can pic similar weights are at what distance they can pick it and with how much counter weight. That said do you have an actual model number off of it? I've got an old set of Corp of Engineer manuals at the shop that give the weights of just about any piece of construction equipment you can imagine and I figure with a model number I can be a little more precise. Either way I'll look tomorrow and see what I can find for you and post back.

You will probably need a triple axle low boy with tractor to haul it if that is what you are wondering. Contact your local tractor dealer who hauls combines and tractors for a price quote. Or one of the large construction companies that has cranes to see about hauling it.

If all else fails, drive it down to the elevator or truck stop and run it across the scales.

How tall of a boom does it have? Is this one where the boom has its own set of dollies to move the boom?
