The AC quit last summer and I had noticed a little leak near the compressor but never got to it until Sunday. When I started to charge out of the DIY aerosol can I saw a leak right at the fill adapter. So took care of the leak and got about a can of refrigerant into it but it doesn't want to take any more. It is cooling but not very strongly. any Ideas?

You could have overcharged it, or undercharged or air in the system.
Hard to tell without gauges.

Since there was a leak for months I assumed that there was no pressure. how do you get air out?

Did you disconnect any of the lines? If you did, the system MUST be evacuated to remove the air from the system. Air in the system is like letting ice cubes melt in your soda or tea. It dilutes the refrigerant. Also, moisture from the air will mix with the refrigerant creating acid that will eat holes in the system. You need a set of gauges and be able to interpret them to know what's going on.
Those "DIY Kits" are only for adding to the system, not for major service. How did you find your leak? Oil leakage indicates a large leak. Small leaks can only be found with a leak detector or tracer dye and a black light.

Hey showcrop, To do it right you need to put the system under a vacuum to remove air and possible moisture. You should have a set of gauges for the type system you have. R-12? R-134A? For what it costs for the equipment, it may be cheaper to get a Pro to do it.

I assume this is on the tractor or car? Or on the house? If on the tractor or car the best thing to do is go to Walmart and get one of cans with a guage on it.mmost of them today have leak sealer, (rubber and metal() iin it. Is this 134 or is it and older pre 95 with R-12. Any way while filling the system make sure you are using the big line which is the suction line. Make sure the A/c is on the highest setting and keep the compressor running to draw the freon in. If the compressor is clicking on and off it is not charged. As the charge increases the compressor will run for longer times. This may take 20-30 minutes.Usually 134a is hard to overcharge with and will stop when the guage says full. Good luck. email me if you do not un derstand [email protected] Henry

thats right, theres water in air and water turns to acid when mixed with freon,so only time you should add without pulling a vacume is when there is still some pressure in the system sir

My vacuum pump is just a salvaged compressor from a 110 V window air conditioner; been using it for 20 or 25 years. Depending on what you"re working on, may need to replace the receiver/dryer also.

Just because the pressure us gone does not mean that air or moisture has gotten to the system. It simply means that freon has leaked out. A vacuum pump is only needed when the system has been taken apart. Vacuuming is the rule in that instance.
the main purpose is to remove moisture. Following my instructions will not harm your system in any way. 40 years as an AC person has proved that. Henry

If you read the dye can, it tells you to flush all dye out of system after fixing leak. Fun, fun, what do you flush with? Guess it is corrosive or something. Some shops here however, routinely add dye when charging. Huh???
